I choose to honor those LGBTQ+ who served. Many of them taking to the grave the shame of being who they were and never feeling comfortable to tell anyone. And, for those who were told they couldn’t serve because of who they are. Feel free to say that’s in “poor taste.” I have a clear conscience knowing I honor true heroes.

Memorial Day is the time to remember and honor our war dead and the service and courage of all our military veterans and their families. This means the late fighter pilot/POW, Sen. John McCain and his family. And all grieving gold star parents and other family members - who Donald Trump has dishonored and hurt while a candidate and/or president. Plus the military men and woman who are being tossed out of the service, or are victims of discrimination there - because of their sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, or religious beliefs.

Who “sacrificed their life to protest my Bill of Rights”?

My uncle, who sailed across the English Channel to fight an army led by a man who didn't believe in individual rights.

My grandfather, who said across the Pacific to stop another invading army from attacking America.

And the countless other men and women who've done the same.

Memorial Day is a day to commemorate those who have lost their lives defending your right to say whatever you want. There are a lot of other places you could have been born where you would have been told how to think and what to say. At least be thankful that you were born in a place where you can speak your mind.
