WPON WCXI Updates - 2020
Re: WPON Update - 2019 What Next for the station.
With WPON getting closer to actually putting this thing on the air what next ? Will they remain Oldies and what about 1160 ?
Re: WPON Update - 2019
I just made some rough calculations. If WPON is running 250 watts, nondirectional from an 82 degree tower, the inverse field is about 150 mV/m @ 1 km, or 93.2 mV/m at 1 mile. If the signal is 0.1 mV/m at 30 miles, this corresponds to a whole path conductivity of 3 mS/m.
With an IDF of 524 mV/m @ 1 km, 325 mV/m @ 1 mile at 90 degrees true, the measured field would be 0.325 mV/m @ 30 miles. 30 miles East would be somewhere in the vicinity of Metro Parkway and Hayes Rd., near the border of Sterling Heights and Clinton Township. That's the maximum IDF in the pattern.
WCXI 1160
With an IDF 2125 mV/m @ 1 km, 1320 mV/m @ 1 mile at 90 degrees true, the measured field would be 2.244 @ 30 miles. This would still be in the vicinity of Metro Parkway and Hayes Rd., near the border of Sterling Heights an Clinton Township.
If they were running 3750 watts nondirectional for testing, the inverse field would be about 360 mV/m @ 1 mile. The measured field would be 0.612 mV/m.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Re: WPON Update - 2019
I notice that the deepest null in WPON's daytime pattern is at about 190-200deg.
Was this null primarily designed to protect WSDS on second-adjacent, or WLQR on first-adjacent? (WLQR's license was in force when the new CP app was made).
Now that WLQR has been deleted, could the phasing, field ratios and power input to the new towers be recalibrated to provide a better signal southward?

Re: WPON Update - 2019
1160 could go back to classic country. Another option is to move the sports format there, and put classic country on 1090.
Re: WPON Update - 2019
We don’t need another do nothing Sports station network feed. They should bring in a music specialty format, I have a couple formats that could be tried, Classic Country, True Classic Rock 1964-1973, Classic Soul, All Motown, Or Just broker the station to You and I at reasonable rates per hour like WPON did back before the shutdown, Anyone could have a music radio show but keep the station music intensive.
Re: WPON Update - 2019
It wouldn’t be another sports feed- just moving 1090s format to 1160. 1090 could be leased out I am sure- someone did it last year with a rap format. Only lasted one month because there was virtually no revenue. A classic country format would likely do better, but would still take work to make money.

Re: WPON Update - 2019
Or they could broker it to Ron Cameron like 1400 The Patriot .
Re: WPON Update - 2019
Why would you want to waste a soon to be great signal on 1160 for some lame ass sports programming that 1090 offers. Kind of stupid wouldn’t you say. What really has 1090’s programming have to offer and how many listeners do they have. Actually turn in 1090’s license and go silent is what I would do, The land that the towers are on is worth more than the station itself. Look where the towers are at in a Commercial or Industrial setting, I see $$$$$ Just for that piece of real estate.fuzzpower wrote: ↑Fri Mar 29, 2019 11:22 am It wouldn’t be another sports feed- just moving 1090s format to 1160. 1090 could be leased out I am sure- someone did it last year with a rap format. Re: WPON Update - 2019
Forget sports. The Detroit area has an FM sports station, thus no AM sports station could possibly compete.
This is because the very same demographic that listens to sports (WM 35-60ish) has the most hate for AM radio.
The WPON site is also undesirable real estate. Low lying ($$$ for flood insurance), not easy to access, and far from thuroghfares.

Re: WPON Update - 2019
Both AM 1160 and 1460 need to do something that isn’t offered on AM or FM, Plain and simple. And as I said before the owner should seriously consider shutting down WCAR 1090 and turn in the license. That station has been neglected for years and besides I have lightbulbs in my backyard that are more powerful.

Re: WPON Update - 2019
Is true that 1090 is a peashooter, but so is WPON, and despite its 15kW, the new WCXI on 1160 will not be another WJR.
WCXI simulcasting shows on either WCXI or WPON could be practical.
In fact, 1090 as WERB was built as a companion to 1430 WBRB.

Re: WPON Update - 2019
Why simulcast if both stations cover most of the same area. And besides that Sima Dude must have some pretty hefty bills to pay for building WCXI/WPON, So it would on a business level make sense selling the land that 1090’s towers are on and put that towards the big expense of the buildout of 1160/1460. If it were me that’s what I would do, If you put it up for sale it most likely wouldn’t sell.
Re: WPON Update - 2019
How much is industrial land worth in Garden City anyhow? It’s an OK area, but not exactly booming.
1160 will have almost no night power. Actually, 1460 won’t either.

Re: WPON Update - 2019
WCXI could have about 10 kW Night, directed North with about six towers, four or five of which are already there. I'd have to look at the tower diagram and spacings again. WPON could possibly have more Night power, but toward WFNT 1470 about thirty miles North, and into North Oakland County, it wouldn't have much impact, if it does now. WPON has a high NIF, WFNT's is quite low. In the old days, straight North was over Pontiac, and nondirectional Days. They should have figured out how to put the array on top of whatever was built at Square Lake and Telegraph, rather than moving far away in poor soil in the wrong direction from Benstein and Loon Lake Rd. Dual use sites are becoming more common.
Look at this one in CA. WPON on top of a building with three towers in an industrial park would be a cake walk by comparison. The site linked below is for a two 50 kW station diplex.

Re: WPON Update - 2019
Is WPON on right now? There’s no trace of it in Dearborn or Canton. Perhaps it is too far away.
I can get a scratchy WCXI.
