And when you do, remember the correct offset from WWV's UTC to your local time zone (-4 hrs for Eastern).

I'm guessing that occurs not from ordinary F layer skip, rather from the more elusive Sporadic-E propagation.k8jd wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 11:58 amI know they dropped the 25MHz transmitter for a while, but now it's back. When they do their "TOH" ID, I always expect them to break into this song.

Sometimes I hear CHU on 14670 kHz but it's real unusual short skip for them to reach Detroit !
Re: WWV / WWVH
On New Years's Eve a few months ago, I tried to tune into WWV at 2400hrsZ to see if there was a leap second. I could get nothing on 10 MHz, which usually comes in loud and clear. The WWV signal on 5MHz came in good, but at 2358, some station in South Carolina popped on, and walked all over WWV. The same thing happened a year ago, only it popped on at 2359.
Re: WWV / WWVH
Late nights I get WWV best at 5 MHz and fair on 2.5, but you need some outside wire antenna to hear the lower freqs.
CHU is great on 3330 kHz, here near Detroit, all night and mornings and evenings. ! When the summer thunderstorm season comes, those freqs get really noisy.

The F layer is pretty poor lately

Re: WWV / WWVH
What I'd really like would be WWV at 40MHz, as it would be an alarm for 6m and Low-VHF Sporadic-E openings.k8jd wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 11:58 amI know they dropped the 25MHz transmitter for a while, but now it's back. Re: WWV / WWVH
I predict WWV will be America's most listened to radio station tonight. Listenership will peak at 2:00 AM in each time zone.
I don't mean to brag, but I just put a puzzle together in 1 day and the box said 2-4 years.
Re: WWV / WWVH
I made a chart for all the The WWV and CHU frequencies Vs time of day every hour. I put a number for signal strength for each hour for several weeks.
Pretty much what you would expect but a few surprizes on 14670 and 25 MHz now and then. Had many blanks for the early morning hours. I bet computer guys could figure a way to automate that !!

They also are on 2.5 MHz pretty good at night here.k8jd wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 11:58 amI know they dropped the 25MHz transmitter for a while, but now it's back. Right now, about 9:00 PM Sunday evening I'm getting both WWV and WWVH on 15 MHZ at about equal strength.

Tuesday morning 12:30 AM, 15 MHZ. WWVH only. SINPO 44444

Re: WWV / WWVH
I tend to try to listen to WWV on New Year's Eve at 0hrs coordinated universal time, to try to see if they have a leap second. Usually, I have been getting it on 10 MHz. This year, It was barely hearable on 5, and sporadic on 10. I could sometimes get it good enough to hear some of the clicks and beeps, but could not make out the ID on either frequency. Last year, some shortwave station from South Carolina walked over it with one minute to go; I did not get that station this year either.
Re: WWV / WWVH
I don't think there was EVER a time I could not find CHU or WWV on one or more of the frequencies they use. At night WWV is great on 2.5. 5 and 10 MHz, Chu is great any time of day or night on 3330 and 7850., in the daylight hours WWV is strong on 10, 15, and in high solar years on 20 and 25 mHzWC8KCY wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 12:11 pmYup, today's the day. I usually check reception of CHU along with WWV and go with the clearer signal.
Some days, none of those signals are audible enough to use. In that event, I just use the clock on my cell phone, which is usually spot-on with the SW broadcasts.
Ho.
CHU is good here in S.E. MI on 14670, on good F propagation days when short skip is heard on 20M .
Do you have aome kind of Short wave antenna connected on your radio or just a Little Whip? That makes a big difference.
Is CHU going to ever build the Western Facility they were talking about a few yeas ago >>??
Re: WWV / WWVH
One of the first QSL cards I ever received as a kid SWL, late 50s-early 60s, was from CHU, when they were on 7335, and they never used the callsign. The announce was just "Dominion Observatory Canada. Eastern Standard Time..." None of that French time, either, IIRC.k8jd wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 5:58 pm

Also used to copy WWV on 5 and 10 mc when it was still in Maryland.
Recently I thought to check WWV on 25MHz, which I'd kind of forgotten was there, since I don't have it in a memory channel in the Yaesu. It was a high MUF day, and it was just banging in. Decided it was a good time to fire up on 12 and 10M and make a few CW and digital QSOs.
Re: WWV / WWVH
I used to use an AM BC/SW Magnavox portable when I was very young. I would put it next to a TV receiver tower leg, and when WWV was still in Maryland, 5 MHz boomed in nearly all the time. Conditions were N7 nearly all the time. Anyone ever hear N8 or N9? I didn't. And was it U5 disturbed conditions? That was the lowest I heard.
