Overnight, 1 person won the Powerball’s $842-million jackpot… in Grand Blanc.
WNEM has the story:
https://www.wnem.com/2024/01/02/winning ... and-blanc/
WJRT has the story:
https://www.abc12.com/news/breaking-842 ... 95968.html
Even WDIV Detroit has the story (out of market):
https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/loc ... -michigan/
And WILX Lansing (smaller market):
https://www.wilx.com/2024/01/02/winning ... l-jackpot/
And WOOD Grand Rapids (nowhere near Flint, but still realizes it’s a story of statewide and national interest):
https://www.woodtv.com/news/michigan/84 ... years-day/
As does NBC News:

And FOX News:

So you’d expect the local NBC and Fox affiliate — Mid-Michigan NOT NOW! — to have the story of the winning ticket sold in its backyard. But nope. Nothing other than a story published prior to the drawing.
Of course there’s nothing on the morning news… since there’s not a local newscast. And there’s nothing on the National Desk… since it’s fired most of WEYI’s news staff. In fact TND hasn’t updated its website in more than 12 hours. Not even an AP story on the Powerball winning ticket. Nothing on Sinclair sister stations WWMT Kalamazoo or WPBN Traverse City that could be syndicated. Sinclair is simply the laziest news organization ever.
Even former WEYI Anchor/“independent journalist” Dave Bondy has a story posted.
To help my former colleagues, here’s the press release from the Michigan Lottery that they can just copy and paste onto MidMichiganNow.com:
https://milotteryconnect.com/2024/01/02 ... blanc/amp/
Great job Sinclair SVP of “News” Scotty Livingston, the News Director turned WEYI GM Kevin Dunaway and the never seen Kalamazoo based news Director Karin Movesian on dropping the ball on another local news story!!!
Acceptable registrations in the queue through June 3 at 5:00p ET have now been activated. Enjoy! -M.W.

Breaking Lottery News! Mid-Michigan NOW asleep at the wheel again
Re: Breaking Lottery News! Mid-Michigan NOW asleep at the wheel again
They finally got off their ass and sent out an alert in the late morning, as one came up on my IPhone then…
Re: Breaking Lottery News! Mid-Michigan NOW asleep at the wheel again
They pushed it 9 HOURS after the Michigan Lottery and WNEM and WJRT posted stories. Why even bother sending a push alert at that time? It just reinforces how far behind the competition WEYI is.
This isn’t a criticism lobbed at the overworked and underpaid news staff. It is squarely the fault of overpaid and underworked station managers who set their staff up for failure.
