94.1 WHST now on the air
94.1 WHST now on the air
Interesting they took the old call letters from 106.1 from Tawas. Broadcasting a simulcast of 1340 WLEW's country music format, they are cranking out 15,000 watts. Not sure exactly when they went on the air, but reception here in Tawas City is very good.

Where are they located?

Tower is in Huron County southwest of Kinde. City of license is Pigeon.
WKYO 1360 is now the only AM station in the Thumb without an FM presence unless one counts WPHM. WMIC recently signed on a translator at 95.3.

I thought WKYO had applied for an FM translator, but I can't find it anymore.
WLEW never even applied for one, but I guess the plan was for WHST all along.

Re: 94.1 WHST now on the air
WHST should have an all Harry S. Truman format to match the call letters. All stories about and speeches by the former President. Once an hour, play "(America Needs You) Harry Truman", by Chicago.
The reason WHST comes in well in Tawas is that it goes straight downhill to Lake Huron from the same tower as WLEW-FM 102.1, and then crosses the essentially flat "terrain" of Lake Huron with little attenuation. Longley Rice is a better predictor of signal strength than truncated model prediction methods like the FCC F(50,50). That is only accurate on fairly flat coastal areas where the other equation terms in the prediction equation are relatively negligible.

I heard some derogatory meanings for WHLS.
WHST isn't much better in that regard.

Competitors and disgruntled employees often come up with really derogatory phrases for many stations.audiophile wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 11:41 amI heard some derogatory meanings for WHLS.

WLS was once labelled "World's Last Station", even inside the station, by DJs and local programming people frustrated with the Rick Sklar orders to not play tracks that weren't already established hits. Compared to smaller market stations, it's format was more like recent recurrents than truly contemporary Top 40. That also had an effect on the Billboard Hot 100 being way behind smaller market stations. Other ABC owned stations were also way behind. Some said it was because they had a phobia about playing "stiffs", some said they feared Payola investigations and having to have a team of lawyers to defend ABC from such allegations.
You can see on the ARSA Charts for WLS where tracks would not be played and suddenly appearing at around #15 on their charts without ever even being a Pick Hit.

Are they religious stations? Because that would make it that much funnier.audiophile wrote: ↑Fri Mar 10, 2023 11:41 amI heard some derogatory meanings for WHLS.

That could be part of the reason why WCFL was able to give them such a run for their money in the late '60s and early '70s. Detroit was more fortunate in that WKNR and CKLW tended to be ahead of the national charts.
WPAG in Ann Arbor (now WTKA) was said to stand for "women's panties and girdles," I believe due to the fact that the original studios were in the same building as a women's clothing store.
Some other unflattering acronyms I've heard for other stations: "We Bore All People" for WBAP Fort Worth/Dallas, and "We've Done Everything Else" for WDEE Detroit (now WLQV, the former WJBK that went Country in 1969).

In Sarnia 1070 CHOK was sometimes called "Choke Radio"
In Chicago 95.5 FM had a strong rating in that cities Top 40 battle during the mid 1970's. ABC had both WLS which remained #1 in teen ratings, and WDAI on FM which was AOR. This squeezed out WCFL by then. When WCFL began, WLS was their only direct competitor.

Re: 94.1 WHST now on the air
In 1982, Capital Cities' plans to switch the WJR-FM Beautiful Music format to Mike Joseph's Hot Hits were the worst-kept secret in local radio. Yet someone (the GM I think) denied the format change through his teeth to the Free Press, claiming that "HYT" stood for "height," as in "the height of beautiful music."
Re: 94.1 WHST now on the air
WKNR was actually named for the owners, Fred and Nellie Knorr. Their one time manager, John Carroll, went to manage co owned WKMF Flint, then bought the station, then sold it to Beck Ross and bought WIOS. Later, the call letters for their FM, WKJC, seemed to reflect his whole career, and then, the second FM was WHST, after moving up and down the dial.
WKMF 1470 was originally WWOK, OK Radio, in 1947, but it didn't last long and was soon silent, and CHOK was also called OK Radio. There were probably too many new stations signing on immediately after the war to support it
WBBM-FM changed on 96.3 a few months before WJR-FM became WHYT 96.3, both with Mike Joseph's Hot Hits format. While introducing a completely tight playlist, it quickly burned out and the playlist had to be expanded from 9 or 10 current core songs to about 25. Mike Joseph was well known in markets in Michigan from the late 1950s onward, so if he showed up in Detroit, everyone knew what was going to happen.

96.9 out of Standish had those call letters in the 1990s.
