What does this mean for our current TV sets and all devices hooked up to it? Compatibility, or planned obsolescence?

ATSC's finalized now, and it will NOT be backwards compatible. It uses a different modulation scheme (COFDM vs. 8-VSB) and a different video codec (H.265/Scalable HEVC MPEG Program Stream vs. MPEG-2 Transport Stream)...
That means we'll need either new sets, or converter boxes... but this time around, there's no money for a rebate program.
I wonder if WJBK Fox 2 will try to team up with someone and have a simulcast for older sets...
if done improperly, this could very well kill off over-the-air television.

I have to buy another converter box for my already digital smart TV I bought last year? This is getting ridiculous.

The good news is that, by law, broadcasters will need to continue to deliver TV signals using the current ATSC 1.0 standard for an additional 5 years after this transition is completed. That means your TVs and other OTA gadgets will be useful until 2025 at the very least.

that's only PARTLY correct. The x.1 subchannels have to be simulcast in ATSC 1.0. all the digital subchannels like x.2 and x.3 don't have to be (and might have to be dropped if a channel agrees to simulcast a partner)

Re: ATSC 3.0 To Be Deployed In 40 U.S. Markets By End Of 2020
Everything is still coming together for ATSC 3.0, the whole situation is kind of "chicken and the egg". The turners won't be available on the market in mass until holiday 2020, and stations will start to switch at the same time the hardware is just hitting the market. I can't see them just dropping all the sub-channels on ATSC 3.0 and only keeping the Main feed up on the old standard. Most of the subchannels only broadcast in 480i, but since most of what they are playing are old reruns they don't need much better. Look at repack, that has been coming since 2017 and the Detroit market won't be even fully switched over till March of 2020.
ATSC 3.0 will double the amount of channels that can be carried, so theoretically one broadcast tower can do 1080i of ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox. It should allow boardcasters to do a 4K of the main network, and still have plenty of room for 1080i and lower subchannels. I am curious if ATSC 3.0 will travel further, and if my reception will still be impacted by high winds.
Unless Comcast and AT&T are put in charge and then you will need to buy all new equipment as fast as possible or sign back up for cable.

Not to sound like an old ogre, but if this change makes my old equipment unusable without more converters, I will just give it up. I am unwilling to constantly keep up with this. TV isn't important enough to me to constantly shell out money for new equipment.

Anyone know if Winegard or Channel Master plan to release a new 769X series type over the air TV antenna that is optimized on the new more restricted UHF channel range? Certainly a 751X now would be good, since those channels will obviously be available for a few years based on the end of 2020 goal. Don't know when a 736X might be enough. Maybe add a Low VHF dipole and make it part of a Big VHF reflector? Maybe a wide folded dipole, both physically and bandwidth wise, designed to function as at least a 713 reflector as well as a 26 folded dipole, perhaps call it a Model 26751?
Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Is this strictly an OTA issue?
Re: ATSC 3.0 To Be Deployed In 40 U.S. Markets By End Of 2020
Yes this is only for people using OTA Antennas.
I am sure everyone will start advertising "Optimized for ATSC 3.0" and "Best for ATSC 3.0" antennas. but you will have to understand the specs, or know of good websites that review the information to know for sure.

So buying a new 4K HD tv right now means your ready for 3.0 or will you still need a converter box???

Nope, you have to wait for TVs that have ATSC 3.0 equipped tuners. Many will advertise ATSC 3.0 ready because they can do 4K, but without the proper turner you are screwed. All that is suppose to hit the market during the 2020 Holiday buying season. So yeah don't plan on buying any TV's or DVRs for another year or two.

Re: ATSC 3.0 To Be Deployed In 40 U.S. Markets By End Of 2020
Further complicating matters:
The modulation schemes for ATSC 3.0 and ATSC 1.0 are different.
One cannot transmit 3.0 and 1.0 on one transmitter.
Scripps/WXYZ bought WXON, giving them a duopoly, and allowing them to compete in the 10pm news game.
They will be able to broadcast in 3.0 from the RF31 transmitter and in 1.0 from the RF25 transmitter (or visa versa).
Everybody else will have to make a deal.
This could also be a threat to subchannels. With some transmitters being used for 3.0 programming, more TV network flagship channels will be multiplexed like 13 ABC and CW13 on WTVG. As some stations will be broadcasting in 1.0 on their own transmitter and on 3.0 on someone else's, subchannels will have to be further compressed if not abandoned. In bandwidth-starved markets like Lansing, there could be no subchannels.
Of course, when ATSC 1.0 is shut down, there will be more room for subchannels - but will subchannel networks be able to reboot after the hibernation is over?
