Speed limits
Speed limits
Kind of an old story, but....
http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/201 ... mph_s.html
I think 70 is plenty high enough in Michigan for a maximum speed limit, especially with the frequency of bad weather and idiots already driving way too fast when the roads are icy. Between the weather and the deer...

Re: Speed limits
It should be 80. Everybody does 80 anyways... They do 80 in bad weather. They won't see 80 and do 90 either.bmw wrote:Kind of an old story, but....

Re: Speed limits
I would only support it with "smart signs", ones that adjusted based on traffic and road conditions.

Re: Speed limits
I think I'd rather see the signs stay at 70, and direct law enforcement to only stop above 80 or 85. I agree with bmw, and disagree with NS8401. I think a signed speed limit of 80 is going to have many drivers exceeded 95-100. That’s just too darn fast to stop for a backup, or avoid a sudden lane change.
Re: Speed limits
Most people don't feel comfortable at 95-100... Many cars start reacting negatively to those speeds...Circle Seven wrote:I think I'd rather see the signs stay at 70, and direct law enforcement to only stop above 80 or 85. Re: Speed limits
If you google up 85th percentile studies all indicate raising the speed limit to the 85th percentile does not raise the whole bar.
This proposal is based on 85th percentile theory.
Here is just one link of numerous you can find.

Isn't that pretty much the case already? <10 MPH over they let it go?Circle Seven wrote:I think I'd rather see the signs stay at 70, and direct law enforcement to only stop above 80 or 85. Re: Speed limits
Out west where the the speed limits are 80, my completely unscientific experience was that it was surprisingly rare to be passed while doing 80. Most seemed perfectly happy between 75-80.

Re: Speed limits
I remember doing 80 MPH in Nebraska in summer 1997, it was a bit unnerving at that speed, so I can see why.
I think I still got 43-44 MPG at that speed in my new oil burner.

Is this the same oil burner we've talked about before?audiophile wrote:I remember doing 80 MPH in Nebraska in summer 1997, it was a bit unnerving at that speed, so I can see why.

Re: Speed limits
Leave it at 70 and put more cops on the road to make money off the speeders.
And if somebody wants adjustable speed limit "smart signs" everywhere then you take some money out of your wallet to pay for it. Because that's a helluva lot more expensive than signs made out of plywood and stickers.

Re: Speed limits
Lower it to 55 and really rake in the dough... 70 permanent state police assigned to pull people over per county should be the only 70 involved...JackAttack FM wrote:Leave it at 70 and put more cops on the road to make money off the speeders.

Re: Speed limits
Artificially low speed limits are also a safety hazard due to the disparity between the "I'm not going over 55ers" and the "Screw it, I'm still doing 80ers". No amount of policing can fix that. 70 is good for most of Michigan, maybe 75 in areas where the exits are roughly more than 2 miles apart.
Re: Speed limits
But if 90% of the people already go 80 then what's the harm in raising it to 75 everywhere?Howard Jones wrote:Artificially low speed limits are also a safety hazard due to the disparity between the "I'm not going over 55ers" and the "Screw it, I'm still doing 80ers".
