Robinson went to Hutchinson Funeral Home in Detroit on Friday to see her mother one last time before the viewing. She said she realized the body in the casket was not her mother.

“I looked at her feet and I didn’t see that mole that my mom has on her feet and I looked at that man and I said, Sir, this is not my mama, and he said it just like this. He said, ‘I’m sorry. They must have cremated your mom a week or two ago. I’m so sorry,’” Robinson said.

Robinson said the family still does not have the ashes the funeral home claims are her mother’s.

Funeral homes and mortuaries are some of the worst regulated businesses in the country. Not sure how bad it is in Michigan but certain states have virtually zero oversight on the industry. My sister lost thousands of dollars to some crook in Colorado, notoriously one of the worst states in the union.

There is a great book about the funeral industry "Going Out Green". The consolidation companies basically have made it illegal to bury or cremate someone without paying an exorbitant fee. In the case of Hutchinson, that just sounds like a poorly operated business. The good news is that Mom likely doesn't care what happened to her.

The idea of gathering them up (whether they like it or not) from the streets and taking them to a central location for treatment / help / whatever. In Trump’s hands that would be some sort of terrible thing (he’s the one who prattled on about it) but in the right hands that could be immensely beneficial to everybody. At least they wouldn’t be just randomly everywhere with a sizable percentage running amok. I get to see the festivities on a daily basis. Just letting them wander around absolutely sucks.

Here's a neat idea: housing them with support services. You realize Autistic people could easily find themselves in this "beneficial" idea of yours.

I do realize that. I’m also talking about housing them with support services. But not a this or that choice of stand on the corner with a literal cardboard box top and hide from passing cars by putting it over your face or go get some support services. You’re talking about the homeless… I suppose I’m talking about the helpless.

We really need major investments in mental health and housing people so that seeing said guy on the corner would be an event you’d be talking about for years because it’s unheard of for someone to be living on said corner. And yes I passed paranoid box guy every day for 2 years on the same corner, I’m sure lots of homeless advocates on their way home from their non-profit jobs or on the way into the office did too.

And you have asked those advocates keeping that person alive what they would want to see?

I bet it's not shipping them to someplace warmer.

In my scenario they drive on by like he’s wallpaper. I never once saw anybody there helping the guy except for other homeless folks sharing things like food. That was a good thing.

But let’s be honest… lots of them choose to live that way and a lot of your affordable housing would be destroyed by a sizable number of them in 6 months or less. That’s been a chronic issue. You can give them housing and the option to get help but it likely won’t stick for a sizable number of them. Not to mention the opposition to such housing in many places. Nobody wants that near them.

That hasn't been my experience working with people experiencing homelessness since I was 14.

Yes, some need more support living indoors than others, but generally, things smooth out within 6 months. I've got some great stories.
