I am sure there is a reason behind this but I don't know what it is so I'm asking...

Is WDET not allowed to have sports related content? A weekly hourlong show would suffice.

It's their choice. Biggest reason in Detroit would be that with the commercial stations covering things pretty well, there wouldn't be much interest in terms of generating donor dollars.

There were countless big signaled non-commercial stations that had sports coverage, the vast majority being university owned covering their school's teams. While a lot of that is gone now due to money, their is nothing preventing sports programs.

Years ago, I want to say they did have a weekly show of some kind devoted to sports, maybe an hour or two in length.

870 WKAR had a daily hour-long sports talk show maybe a decade ago. The guy who hosted it (Al Martin) still does a sports show on WKAR-TV.

In the 1970's WDET broadcast Wayne State Football games.
