FM96 from London receivable this morning

For those who enjoy catching CFPL-FM from London, ON, the signal is booming into much of SE Michigan this morning.

It is walking all over Big Country 95.9 from Windsor.

It’s one of my go to stations when in the Port Huron or Sarnia area. The Detroit stations are spotty, and local stations aren’t very interesting.

I was pulling it all the way down 23 on to 14 east. A rare picket fence, but it was enough to get RDS.

I used to love them and K106.3. Different playlists, deeper cuts and some great Canadian music that we are sorely missing now.

Cool 95.1/100.7 & 106.3 still play some deep cuts and of course Canadian Content. Definitely an alternative to boring Detroit radio.

I used to pick up both 106.3 & 95.9 (along with Chatham's 94.3) with surprising frequency in Ann Arbor over 25 years ago. 106.3 & 94.3 were brand new radio stations at the time. When tropo was active, all three came in like locals. There were no Detroit area translators on FM back then, and 95.9 in Windsor wasn't around yet.

95.9 back then was a Modern AC masquerading as a rock station, 106.3 was probably more Rock AC, and 94.3 was a surprisingly good modern rock station in its first year (albeit with some air talent that sounded out of place).

None of the rock stations available on the local dial in 2000 or 2001 were nearly as good as WKLQ in Grand Rapids.

I was in Port Huron (Lakeport) today, where FM96 usually blasts in like a local, and it was struggling with fading and static. Something atmospheric was definitely happening today. I saw the VHF tropo forecast map, and all of Lake Huron was in the yellows and oranges.

FM 96 always did get out. It would be even stronger to the west and the northwest if it didn't have to protect WHNN from Bay City.

Art Vuolo used to include CFPL-FM in his Ann Arbor-area radio guides in the early '70s (I believe at that time it was an MOR/AC station that mostly simulcast CFPL-AM). Along with some of the bigger Cleveland stations plus 93.7, 104.1 and 105.7 from Grand Rapids. I wonder how many of those the average listener could actually pick up under normal conditions though.
I remember when I lived in Macomb County in the mid/late '90s FM96 was pretty much listenable year round, as was 93.5 CBCL (only WHMI around then to interfere, and CBCL packed such a wallop they were usually the more listenable of the two). BX93 and CKDK (then running an AC format as K104) were often listenable as well.
