Yeah… and it’s all for a shrinking industry.

Scripps owns Tablo, which is a device made for OTA television viewing.

I've read good things about Tablo, apart from DRM encryption incompatibility.

Tablo does not yet support ATSC 3.0, so DRM isn't an issue.

Zapperbox is still working out its share of issues, but plays nice with DRM and works well as a whole-home tuner and DVR.

Isn't there a regulation stating that cable systems "must carry" local broadcast stations? Or is that now "negotiable"? :?

I have to believe neither side has much leverage considering the present media/technology landscape. I also don't think I'd look kindly on yet another cable rate hike.

The must carry rule only applies when a full power broadcast station demands to be carried, in which case no compensation changes hands.

This is how so many crappy home shopping and religious UHF stations gained cable carriage in the 90s.

For cable systems with limited channel slots, there were caps as to exercisability by broadcasters.

Nonetheless, it was (and is) a moronic rule. It rewards terrible programming.

Commercial stations have for the most part invoked retransmission consent, which removes the "must carry" obligation.

I have fubo. A few months ago, they had a contract dispute with NBC, and they dropped NBC, TBS, USA, and the rest. I thought about changing providers, but just decided to stick with it. Well, I don't miss those stations at all. I kind of surprised even myself, I guess.

E-mail from xfinity:
Some of your channels are unavailable

Our contract with E.W. Scripps Company has expired. Scripps is a local broadcasting group that owns many TV stations across the country. Despite our best efforts, we have not been able to reach a new agreement. This means that some of your local channels and On Demand content are currently unavailable with Xfinity. To see which channels are affected in your area, visit xfinity.com/facts.
Affected stations (at xfinity.com/facts):

Detroit Metro Area – WMYD: IND, Antenna TV, ION Mystery
Detroit Metro Area – WPXD: Grit, ION+
Detroit Metro Area – WXYZ: ABC, Bounce TV, Laff TV

Firstly, thank you for the informed responses to my earlier inquiry. I guess it is "negotiable" in an obtuse way.

As long as I still have H&I (Star Trek), TCM, NBC (Jeopardy!), Fanduel, FLIX, Detroit SportsNet, and C-SPAN I can gut it out.

The only thing I'll really miss on the blacked out stations is Antenna TV, in particular the Johnny Carson re-runs at 11 p.m.

WPXD is still on, no blackout of that channel here on the Plymouth system

It's only Grit and ION Plus that are affected supposedly, not regular ION.

I think the whole thing is childish and stupid. Xfinity is horrible imo.
