What is the radio business like these days?

Unread post by Autoblemike »

Hi All! It has been 15 years since I have worked in this space, and I was just wondering what has changed in the last 15 years? Just would like to hear what it is like from someone who is still in the business.

I-m doing part time--free lance work...The stations I work for have locked doors to the public...need to ring a buzzer to get in if you have a reason to be there...

Most air shifts are pre-recorded and voice tracked..from 5pm Friday til 6am Monday, stations fully automated except for the remote broadcast that are now more rare..Live high school sports broadcasts in many cases dont need a board op and commercials can be played on site ... of course thats when everything goes as planned. Power glitches, nobody monitoring, and plenty of dead air if the NFL or national game you carry changes satellite??? coordinates..some take programming via internet feeds and if that doesnt work..more dead air or wrong programming airs...

Our competitors run syndicated morning shows and most air shifts are from out of market broadcasters working at other stations in the same company.
You have to call, and in some instances an 800 number to conduct business...

Gone are the days, for most if not many, of truly live radio and the local sales rep unfortunately.

I miss the four hour live on-air shift and four other hours of production and other radio activities.
