Worst Sell-outs of Classic Rock in Ads

Unread post by moldyoldie »

The latest is Walmart's absconding of The Who's "Who Are You?" with the lyric "Who knew, who knew". :x :barf
It wasn't bad enough Townshend sold out to C.S.I., but at least they stuck to edited originals.

I noticed Amazon is now using the Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" for their AWS cloud computing platform. Not terrible, but jeesh. :rolleyes

Maybe more classic pop than rock, but Pilot's "Magic" bastardized for the Ozempic ads.

I'm bummed no one ever used Take Me Home Tonight for some kind of pizza or carry out deal.

Many classic rockers are selling their books lately. Dylan sold his so expect to hear more of his stuff.

Keep in mind that The Who's P1 audience is not over 65.

I know this isn't ad related, but along with the sell out theme, how did the band that gave us this:

I recently heard a podcast about the albums of Bob Seger. A 40-something participant in the podcast knew Seger mostly from the "Like a Rock" commercials for Chevy trucks. He didn't mean that as a compliment.

Yes, a sell-out of a different sort, but a sell-out nonetheless! :x
I'm sure you've heard the latter one in any number of ads with lyrics ranging from toilet repair to toilet paper. Strangely appropriate. :barf

No offense, but I do get a kick out of that series of Workday "rock star" ads. :lol

Well I have a negative bias — dealing with their product has left a very sour taste in my mouth. Worst HR software I’ve ever dealt with.

Oh I get that, other than Grace it was a completely different lineup. But that song is so terrible. The fact that a band that had distant roots as a counter-culture band would even remotely consider releasing such a song is astounding.

After my initial post, I looked up the actual lyrics to the song. What a nonsensical mess. That made the song even worse. It's like some 80s Yuppie tried to create an anti-authority song by throwing in random lines that don't make sense in and of themselves, much less when put together in song.
