WOOD Severe Weather Coverage OnLine

Unread post by sholmes031105 »

Seriously, I tried to find coverage then the tornado alarms went off and at Woodtv.com they were not running the live storm.coverage on the main page.

When I finally found it first I had to watch an ad

Coverage started on 9&10 (CBS) about 607. No audio for the first minute, then a VO(likely from the weather guy's house) explaining the threat.

There was a headline with "Watch Live" as the very first item on the home page when I first checked around 5PM yesterday afternoon. It was hard not to see it. Perhaps you logged on earlier than me.

The ad at the beginning of the stream was an annoyance, but overall, I found the coverage to be excellent.

I also watched some of 13's coverage. WOOD was superior. Blake Harms is outstanding at doing live severe weather coverage.

The issue I had with WOOD was that the EAS would regularly override the audio of meteorologists on the OTA signal. The meteorologists were providing detailed analysis but they were silenced several times by a generic EAS alarm. You could see them present the up-to-the-minute radar but their words were muted by generic EAS crap.

I watched MSU VS Auburn on WWMT ARC aired the Severe weather coverage dipped in and out from all the TV stations when there were breaks in the game. Not much action where I lived only a few rumbles of thunder and didn't see lighting either the winds were maybe in the 35 to 40MPH range on the west side of Kazoo just got the rain only.

I was also put off by the EAS override of the WOOD-TV audio. the Storm Team 8 staff does a great job of immediately updating viewers of new watches and warnings posted by the National Weather Service, so the poor audio quality EAS feed was at best redundant. Is there a way the station is allowed to mute it if they are doing weather coverage at the same time the alerts are issued?

There are only four messages stations have to air by law. Weekly, Monthly, National, and Emergency Action Notification messages. Anything else is completely voluntary. Many stations have their EAS decoders on "automatic" so the audio is immediately fed through the system. I'm surprised WOOD (or any TV station) would have the EAS on "auto"

I wouldn't be surprised if WOOD's is on "auto" because their master control is in Indy.

Could be. A lot of stations run their EAS on automation as it is simply easier. I don't know if the systems have the ability to configure each code separately for automation.

Quick question for those who said that WOOD-TV kept letting their EAS over-ride their own program. Where you watching on cable? If so, the cable company is over-riding WOOD-TV8, and they have no control over that. The cable feed would explain all the over-rides.
