Oh boy! The FCC, in their infinite wisdom, is considering expanding the FM frequency down to 82Mhz to allow for more stations. This would include Channel 6's frequency, which would require a few stations within the United States to move to another channel (knowing full well that their channel number has nothing to do with their identification).

I'm pretty much against the idea for the FM station monopoly to have more access to put their garbage on air. Instead, if we need more frequency, allow smaller outfits the chance to put something different on those bands. NPR and others don't need any more channels. I would also like to see a channel space for low power, specialized programming that fits the community they are in. Maybe modify Part 15 to allow for more power, something like 20 Watts or so? Allow hobby folks to play with some spectrum legally with some standards. I'm not advocating for pirate radio operators, but whatever, if your foot print is small, why not allow folks to dabble in yardcasting?

I also would have to say that this bandwidth would be much better suited for radio than the few TV stations that now occupy it.

Modify Part 15 to 20 watts, hell no, that is an awful idea. Create a new license class, much better idea. Keeping the corporate a-holes from getting more licenses, absolutely.

My vintage Japanese 70's Marantz receiver starts at 76mhz. If it happens, I guess I'm all set for in home listening. As usual, the pathetic FCC is several decades late to the party.

Other than Japanese radios and hobbyists, who can even tune into frequencies below 87.7? It would take decades to replace the millions upon millions of radios.

Other than the hardcore enthusiasts like we have on this forum, who would even bother replacing their radios?

If this proposition passes, would Channel 6 be removed entirely from the TV spectrum? In the meantime, by the way, what would happen to all TV stations broadcasting on Channel 6?

My understanding is that the existing TV stations would be protected and therefore can remain on RF six if they choose. Right now Philadelphia's ABC 6 is there with full power.

From what I understand the FM carrier for RF six is at exactly 87.7(5) MHz which makes these Franken FM's (as there referred to) slightly off channel.

Today was supposed to be the meeting day and now I wonder when the decision regarding the matter will be made public. I'm not seeing any results on RadioDiscussions.com or Google yet.

One interesting angle: There are still "TV Band radios" that carried the audio from VHF TV bands, and if channel 6 were to be reapportioned into the FM broadcast band, those radios could be put to use again.

Appease AM stations shut out from most non-domestic brand electric cars?

If this were to pass, I'm guessing the most sought after frequencies will be the ones at the highest end of the band as a lot of older analog radios can tune below 88.1 - some even down to the high 86's.
