Lions sign DB Rock Ya-Sin for another year - good signing. And old friend QB Teddy Bridgewater returns to back-up Goff.

Goff’s contract has been restructured, freeing $40 million from the salary cap. Time for some actual moves.

My guess is the Lions are banking it to extend the likes of Gibbs, LaPorta, Campbell, et al...and maybe re-sign free agent(s) Muhammad and/or Reader.

Best post you ever made on this site, DTD. I'm 100% in agreement here. Crosby will never be cheaper, Raiders need to make a deal for him, and is exactly what the Lions need. Obviously, not 2 #1s, but Holmes needs to find a way to do this.

I don't see Holmes ponying up for Crosby unless the price comes way down. He refused to do so two years ago when they had their best chance to win or at least make the Super Bowl.

Ben Johnson is not a backstabber or Benedict Arnold. He took a promotion. Unless it was the Raiders or Browns, the vast majority of assistants would have done the exact same thing. I don’t fault him one iota.

The Lions have non-tendered all their remaining free agents. I still believe Holmes is cooking.

Muhammad was, in essence, another James Houston -- strictly a third down pass rusher. His play against the run was wanting. I do believe the Lions place a great value on setting an edge and stopping the run in an all-down DE. Spending $6 million on essentially a one-down player may have been considered a luxury in the team's salary structure; such a player can be found in the draft or on cut-down day.
Note that the bulk of Muhammad's sacks came in only three games.

I'm glad to see them bring back WR/KR Tom Kennedy, if for no other reason than he seems to get open and catch everything thrown to him.
LB Trevor Nowaske was also brought back.

Lions sign former Bucs DB Christian Izien. My guess is he's slated for the slot CB position (nickelback) vacated by Amik Robertson when injuries decimated the secondary, and can also backup at safety. He's got the versatility the Lions like. He entered the league undrafted in 2023.

Lions sign veteran TE and pride of CMU Tyler Conklin. He had some good receiving years with the Vikes and Jets, but played mostly an ancillary role with the Chargers last season.

Lions sign CB Roger McCreary, ex-Titan and Ram and former second-rounder. He started every game as a rookie, but has started fewer and fewer games as his career "progressed".

Lions sign former Panthers and Vikings EDGE D.J. Wonnum for one year and up to $6 million, a similar deal to what Muhammad got from the Bucs. Unlike Muhammad, Wonnum played the great bulk of his team's defensive snaps. He's listed at 6'5" and 256 lb.

Still no big signings. Holmes being cheap. Wonnum might be an OK pickup, the rest seem like spare parts instead of major pieces.

The "big signings" have already been made, mostly by teams desperate for talent and with ample cap room. Holmes isn't being "cheap", he's being fiscally prudent in an effort to bring much needed competition and depth to the roster.
Wonnum in Carolina didn't have the luxury of having Hutch being consistently double and triple-teamed on the opposite end of the D-line. All things being equal, he should thrive here on obvious passing downs at least as well as Muhammad, another "OK pickup" last season.

Lions sign ex-Cowboys and Texans LB and special teams ace Damone Clark; he'll vie for playing time at the third linebacker spot vacated by the departed Alex Anzalone.
They also sign shifty WR/KR Greg Dortch, ex-Cardinal, to compete for the recently vacated fourth WR spot.

Speaking of bringing in much needed competition, the Lions' competition cup runneth over at the guard position; they've signed veteran and oft-injured ex-Niners guard Ben Bartch. He'll join Juice Scruggs, Christian Mahogany, Miles Frazier, Seth McLaughlin, Michael Niese, and Colby Sorsdal for that starting left guard spot and backups.

The Lions need to stop treating retiring consequential players like shit. News like this gives the organization a poor reputation among NFL players, I would assume.
