People like that don't realize/understand that voting in primaries didn't become a thing until the early 20th century, and even then, convention delegates weren't always legally bound to voters' preferences until the early '70s, when the parties pushed for national adoption of a binding primary vote. (1972 was the first year the Democrats held parties in every state and DC; 1976 for the Republicans).
