In fact, the last time any such purchase occurred was in the 1990s, when Capital Cities/ABC Inc. was still in existence. Those were defensive purchases involving WJRT and WTVG because the network was afraid WXYZ would affiliate with CBS (the company was too cheap to simply buy WXYZ).
Things can change in 29 years.

I dont think ABC is buying any stations. Nobody has money right now. Everyone is cutting costs and dumping stations, not buying.

I watched when it was NEWSY I watched it from time to time it was low budget had Headline News feel to it. I wonder if those news shows that air on Scripps stations are dead come Nov or if they will keep them as is.

If not I could see Fox17 moving some syndication in 1PM or 7PM I'd say ICrime would get a full hour 1PM to 2PM & maybe Two & Half Men or Modern Family at 7PM to 7:30PM. I remember that lame show The List when that was dropped ICrime got a double run. WXMI didn't put Scripps News on a subchannel it went to WZPX subchannel.

I pray Scripps doesn’t sell. My concern is that if they do sell, Byron Allen will make a many for 7. If he gets it, WXYZ is in bigger trouble than it already is. If you think Scripps is bad, Allen Media is even worse. FAR worse.

If they do sell, I think Gray Media, Nexstar, and even ABC are much better options. I guarantee you that if Gray or Nexstar gets it, WXYZ is definitely getting a much needed new set.

Out of curiosity, what would the price tag for WXYZ be, if it were to be sold?

As 7 is the cash cow for Scripps, easily outbilling their stations in the larger markets of Tampa and Phoenix, the price tag would be very steep. As long as Scripps stays in the local OTA TV business, WXYZ CH 7 will be in the company.

Given the poor state of the company financials I can’t say I’d be 100% confident it won’t go bankrupt at some point. If they reorganized I can’t imagine 7 wouldn’t be a part of whatever came out of it.

I'd love to see get WXYZ-TV back again. But in today's world, it doesn't seem likely, especially if Disney is looking to unload ABC.
