It's about time to make the decision: go for a playoff spot, or punt? If it's the latter, time to bring up Jung and Dingler, maybe Vilade too. Trade a catcher, trade/cut Canha, and bench or cut McKinstry. Leave Baez on the DL as long as possible, with a full rehab stint in Toledo. Cutting him would be too much dead money (though the Pistons didn't care about that). Best case scenario is Baez bets on baseball during his injury and is banned from baseball, making the contract null and void.

I wouldn't trade Skubal, and Olson is losing value by the start. Maybe Flaherty is on the block.

And their only win came when Justin Verlander was scratched from a start. The last time Verlander faced the Tigers (May 12), he gave up two hits and no runs in seven innings.

In each instance through this point in the season, both squads scored 1 run or fewer in twenty games.

The only difference is that at this point (74 games into the season), the 2003 Tigers were 18-56, while thanks to their hot start this season, the current Tigers are 16 games better at 34-40. Still, they're only going to be sellers at the trade deadline, so the bottom will probably fall out once they start shedding pieces. I suspect Flaherty and Canha will be trade pieces. Maybe even guys like Urshela and Ibanez, decent hitters who are on the wrong side of age 30. Chafin and Shelby Miller could depart to teams needing bullpen depth.

And I disagree about edj's take on Olson. He's pitched heroically all season, only to be victimized by the horrendous lack of run support. He's young and controllable, and those are the guys you try to hang onto.

Olson has been getting bombed the past few starts. I don't expect him to pitch like he did to begin the season, but much better than recent outings.

I don't think he's traded, but his value is likely lower than it was. That could change if he runs together a few decent starts.

I don't disagree with any of that. But, he's still just 24 years old (25 on July 31), and he's by far the youngest starter (and holy crap, how is Casey Mize already 27??? Same age as Skubal!). His control hasn't been great (30+ walks) but he keeps the ball in the ballpark (only 4 HR allowed, best among the starters). I see Olson as a building block and not trade bait.

Losing today to the White Sux, who are pretty much every bit as bad as the 2003 Tigers were. And wearing the ugly ass City Connect jerseys, because if there's one team that desperately needs an alternate uniform it's the Tigers after all.

Maeda actually lowered his ERA with that pathetic outing. They have him for another full season! If he’s shifted to long relief or a starter is traded, they’d probably bring Manning back, even though he hasn’t been good overall in Toledo. I haven’t dug deep enough to see his last few outings. Statwise, the Mud Hens’s best pitcher is Bryan Sammons, who is pushing 30 with no MLB experience and thus not a prospect. Ty Madden is struggling there, and Jackson Jobe in Erie is on rehab.

It will be interesting to see who is traded next month.
