HI. Millenial here.
I don't consider that "classic rock"
The Stones, The Doors, The Who, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith.
That is Classic Rock.

MW you’re right, They need to Get away from the Traditional Classic Rock and be “The New Generation Of Classic Rock”.

I get the distinction but rock stations without currents come in a lot of different flavors. Looks like Wheelz is changing flavors even based on daypart. Not unusual, but the question of what is "classic" and what is modern-ish is more or less a question of what tests better.

Here's my sample hour - appropriate for workday listening (13 songs total):
AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie
Bush - Comedown
Nirvana - Lake of Fire
Sponge - Molly (16 Candles)
Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
Fastway - Say What You Will
Toadies - Possum Kingdom
Staind - Outside
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man
ZZ Top - Tush
Incubus - Stellar
Godsmack - Keep Away
Van Halen - Unchained
My hour blends the artists (Real) Wheels played with artists Millenials would consider classic rock.
At night (after 7p or 8p), I would open up the playlist considerably, featuring more 80's & 90's heavy metal bands, 90's & early 2K's nu metal bands, and catchy alternative hits from the 90's and early 2K's.
I'll offer a nighttime sample hour this evening.
I never understood what happened to Sponge. They were all over Detroit radio in the 90s.
Forget Children of the Grave. Way too deep, and far too early. 1971.
That Fastway song falls in the "House of Hair" category.
Incubus seems to be bastardized outside of Drive and maybe Pardon Me. Doug Podell has an issue with them since they screwed him over at Riff and working with 89x.
Simple Man may also be too deep. Tertiary at best.
J Geils? ELP? WCSX has been lowering spins on those bands for a long time. Most Geils is the 80s stuff now. There's a reason for that.

Go ahead and call WCSX and request anything outside of Paranoid. I'm nuts. Hell, play all of side one of Master of Reality!
And then, when we're playing Tubes deep cuts, and the ratings hang in the high 1's, we can complain that the station needs to go, and then when it does, complain that my genius plan of playing all of 2112 didn't work.
Speaking of covers, The Rockets version of Oh Well still gets the occasional spin. Why doesn't the Fleetwood Mac version get played? The cover version, played differently, by a different artist got airplay!
Shinedown (inexplicably) was hot on rock radio at the time. And that was also 15 years ago.
I've argued this plenty with program and music directors. I remember getting my ass chewed into for playing Red Barchetta. A car song. From Rush's arguably biggest album. During the dream cruise. Just because I think it's a good spin doesn't necessarily mean it IS a good spin. If it was, they'd be spinning it.

I'm not saying it's RIGHT or that I LIKE it, but that's the way it is.

Thankyou MW, this is what Wheelz playlist should sound like for the New Gen of classic rock imho.I had to incorporate a real mix not just one genre for this to work.
