Re: WOMC's Jim "JJ" Johnson Announces Retirement
If I recall it correctly, Steve Dahl was on in the morning on WWWW with George Baier. Dahl got the chance to move on to Chicago and wanted Baier to go with him. George decided to stay behind. Jim Johnson was on W4 later in the day at that time. He moved to the morning as an "interim host", until the station could find a replacement for Dahl. Thus, JJ and The Morning Crew was created. The show did well, and continued on until they moved to WRIF a few years later.

…And a groupie.
Re: WOMC's Jim "JJ" Johnson Announces Retirement
I wonder who his replacement will be. Some suggestions, although 99% sure that none of this will happen:
*Spike, formerly of Channel 955.
*Chuck Gaidica. He was at WOMC in 2011.
*Kevin O’Neill. He was there in 1988-1989.
*Dr. Don Carpenter
*Jim Paolucci
*Dave Fuller
*Jim Harper
*Spike, formerly of Channel 955.

*Kevin O’Neill. He was there in 1988-1989.

*Jim Paolucci
*Dave Fuller
*Jim Harper
Re: WOMC's Jim "JJ" Johnson Announces Retirement
The History is sketchy on this, but what I found online is that Jim Johnson was apparently Program Director at the Carrier Current station at CMU, WCHP, on 650 kHz, circa 1972. Some people from WCHP also were on the open air "student run" station, WMHW 91.5, which was first 10 watts TPO with a 2 Bay Antenna at the time, probably 19 watts ERP, though not specified on the History Card. I don't recall Bill Pearson mentioning the call letters of the station WWCK recruited Jim Johnson from. WCHP is now the callsign of an over the air station, WCHP 760 Champlain, NY.

Kevin, Paolucci, and Harper would all be great choices.BKRPDM wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 9:59 pm I wonder who his replacement will be. Some suggestions, although 99% sure that none of this will happen:

Doc is retired and lives in Florida.
Chuck was 'meh' and very vanilla when he did mornings there before. .
Dave would sound good on WOMC again, but not a good fit for mornings.
I don't think Spike would be a good fit at all.

How about Beau and Lisa Lisa for mornings at 104.3 WOMC

JJ's a legend for sure in Detroit. Very unusual these days to be in the same market that long? Who knows what will happen on his last show?
Re: WOMC's Jim "JJ" Johnson Announces Retirement
Does anyone know if Jim Harper is still at WLXT Light 96.3? He's not on the website that I can find, and I don't remember hearing him on there for a while on Saturday.BKRPDM wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 9:59 pm I wonder who his replacement will be. Jim currently does a show on Saturdays on WJR I believe.

That Saturday show is pretty decent. I turned it on by accident six months ago and am now listening to it on a regular basis.
Re: WOMC's Jim "JJ" Johnson Announces Retirement
I was just told by a reliable source that Jim Harper does whatever program he still does from a home studio.

It doesn't have to be bad audio. Many personalities built home studios during the virus and some of them sound great. Maybe there is some equipment that they want to sell now.

From what I've seen online, it's more like a desk in an unused spare bedroom.
The internet connection hiccups on WJR make for a hard listen. Harper can't get on the Lodge, and drive to the Fisher Building in light traffic, early on Saturday morning? It seems to me, a real PD would say "This sounds like shit, and until there's a solution, you're doing the show from the station" Harper was WNIC's PD for many years. He knows better.
Why bother to have a studio at all, with all of these radio rubes simply phoning it in? In many cases, an old fashioned POTS line would sound better than a wobbly internet connection.
