Wikipedia is in error saying the station signed on in 1979. It's been on the air since at least the early 60's. When I worked there it was on White Lake Drive about 2 miles west of the U.S.31 exit. It was in an old house right where the rail road tracks cross White Lake Road. I believe it would now be across the street from the new High School. I don't know where their studios are now, but I believe the AM still transmits from the tower at the White Lake Road site.

Reviewing the facts, from the actual FCC Microfiche.

The License to Cover for WCBQ, relocating from Fremont, owned by Paul Brandt, was issued 12-21-59. Location for SL and TL was Blank Road and Burpee Rd. Burpee Rd. was renamed White Lake Dr. The station became WLRC in 1964, and WLRQ in 1979. In 1981, it became WPBK. It was 250 watts until circa 1962, when it increased to 1000 watts LS. Looking over the latest Applcations for WMPX and WKLQ, the close spacing was probably a major reason why they moved from Fremont to Whitehall. If they had just used measured conductivities, they may have been OK in Fremont with 1 kW. Their tower was right down town in Fremont, from the History Card.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?
