WLLZ was occasionally playing Iron Maiden, "The Trooper" last winter. Haven't heard it in probably 6 months. Nothing wrong with that song. Songs like that could really make WLLZ stand out. Yesterday, it was "Born to be Wild" followed by Alice In Chains "The Rooster". Not exactly a smooth segue.
As far as Van Halen goes, all of those songs are fair game. I miss hearing "I'll Wait" on WLLZ. That one seems to be in the musical dustbin as well. Great drum solo in that song.
Thanks for that. Doug is certainly in much better voice than he is today. I enjoyed the interview with Rik Emmett from Triumph...and hearing my late friend, Bob Bauer.
Note, how metal bands like Y&T, Helix, Adrenalin, Dio, Quiet Riot, and Twisted Sister are played right alongside The Cars, Jefferson Starship, Honeymoon Suite, and yes, even "Old Time Rock & Roll" by Seger... Doug also said that the most requested song of the night was "Missing You" the new tune by.......John Waite, originally released to AOR, but became a CHR and AC staple.
I had forgotten about Bronze, the hard rock band from the UK...Doug intro'd their new song. I'll have to see if I can find that one on vinyl.
Perhaps we should send this to Doug. Maybe he can lock the suits from IHR in a conference room and force them to listen.
I believe Lee Arnold was PD during this timeframe. Thanks again. Great stuff.

Lee Arnold. Great guy. Chat with him on Facebook from time to time. He was one of those guys that played to win. Not too many like him anymore.

Point of order: this air check, from the summer of 1984, seems to be a lot more current heavy as opposed to air checks I have from 1982 and 1983. Much more gold heavy. Of course, this is evenings and you could open it up more at night, but it seems just about every song played was from 84 or even 83. The prior years weren't that current heavy.

Doug Podell just called "Fire Woman" by the Cult a "deep cut". I shit you not.
I think the Doc of Rock needs his doctor's license revoked!
It's a very good song, but it sure as hell isn't a deep cut.
That's weird on Doug's part. Strongly agree that it isn't a deep cut by any means unless it's an IHeart corporate read.

Its a "deep cut" from WLLZ's perspective because a H*** percentage of what they play is worn out retreads we've all heard a million times. For the rest of us calling that a "deep cut" is patently ridiculous.

Back in October of 1981, 98.7 WLLZ played Ozzy Osbourne "I Don't Know" & then they played a brand new song by Genesis (with Phil Collins) called "Like It Or Not" (from "Abacab") BUT that song did not played on radio since!! Only the title track to "Abacab", "No Reply At All" & "Man On The Corner" were the big hits from that album!!

Abacab really propelled Genesis into mainstream popularity, Duke had some strong songs too. I always like the 1983 self titled album.

Yes. I last remember playing it in 2007-08.
At a prior job, I would have WCSX on sometimes, if it came in that day. This was like mid 2000s.

Heard a choice Van Halen cut from my Lyft driver: “Humans Being”.
Wheels should play it. But instead we’ll hear Jamie’s Cryin’ for the 1,000,000th time.
