The Cornell gang rape case

Unread post by bmw »

Just from some of what I've heard and read, this is looking to turn into a giant political and media circus. Already we have AOC out there convicting the 7 accused. And Letitia James pretty much pre-judging the case on Twitter and then publicly refusing to comment on her own past comments.

Now I don't know if these 7 men are guilty of rape or not. If they are, let them rot. But preliminary indications are that their lives are already ruined and there's no way they're getting a fair trial.

What's "fair"? If life was fair, Trump would be crapping his pants at one of his golf courses on a regular basis, and spouting off to the handful of idiots who still listen to him. Oh wait...

From what the defendants attorneys have already acknowledged, I think they have lost the moral argument.

Is anyone surprised that the guy that voted for a rapist 3 (possibly 5) times is demanding protection for other rapists?

There's a wide, WIDE gulf between immoral behavior and criminal culpability for rape.

Other than child molestation, I can think of no worse crime to be so much as accused of, because at that point your life is over. Doesn't matter if you didn't do it. Doesn't matter if you're overwhelmingly acquitted. You are done in society. So I think such serious accusations should be handled with perhaps just a tad more care by the state (and I'm using "the state" as a generic term for government and its representatives and officials).

So what are your thoughts on the Duke LaCrosse case in 2006?

How do you think these are similar?

The Governor is now piling on critical of the police and local Ithaca DA. This didn't happen at Duke.

Of course she is. We have midterm elections right around the corner.

That was a different situation - that didn't happen. In this Cornell case there was an acknowledged occurrence and the Title IX investigation was closed because the encounter was initially consensual. I hear what you're saying in that rape accusations are very damaging, but law enforcement and/or Title IX compliance offices do no favors to actual victims by subjectively dismissing claims because there was initial consent.
