Odd TOH ID on WOTV 41.2

Unread post by dwp49423 »

Noticed a very strange Top Of Hour ID for WOTV 41.2 (aka "West Michigan CW"). It reads EOTV. I've seen it on at least two different TOH slides.

FWIW, "W" and "E" are adjacent on the qwerty keyboard. And that local Nexstar bunch has a history of typos.

But wouldn't all digital subchannels have the same call letters as the primary channel?

According to the International Telecommunication Union, US broadcast station call signs all begin with either K or W (N and AA-AL are also assigned to the US but used primarily in aviation and amateur radio services).

Call signs starting with E are by ITU policy belong in one of about ten countries but the United States is not one of them. Which country depends on the letter or number following the E. They mostly appear to be Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe.

I believe Nielsen uses the "E" designation for subchannels for ratings purposes. That could explain the legal ID being what it is.

I love how y'all are overthinking what's most likely nothing more than a typo that hasn't been caught yet.

Nielsen designations have no bearing on FCC legal IDs, though. Nielsen may identify 41.2 as "EOTV," but as far as the FCC is concerned, it's still WOTV-DT2. So if the station is using "EOTV" on purpose to match Nielsen, it's probably non-conforming to the FCC's ID requirements.
