Why did 1160 switch to a narrow bandwidth filter?

Audio does not sound as good as before! They need to return to full bandwidth.

Is this a precursor to installing IBOC HD, I wonder?

I would love to put HD radio up if Sima is up to it. The real reason it's at such a shrunken bandwidth is due to the dropouts by the trash 4G internet installed here years ago. The processor is still set to 10khz, but I had to drop the Barix sample rate to 22.4khz to prevent dropouts, resulting in the shrunken bandwidth. I have the cable company coming out to install proper cable internet out here on Tuesday, so everything should be back to 100% that afternoon.

Wow got lucky and listened to first hour of broadcast.Great signal into east Windsor. Is that 250watts??
Also got to hear Steve79 get a shout out.

Plz bring back jingles when u can affiord to it would really add to the format. AM radio is the new frontier to bring back creative radio and niche formats either on terrestrial radio or listening online to the station.

1160 is licensed for 15 kW ERP days. It is a directional signal, though, so actual ERP varies by azimuth. Areas north, east and south receive similar signal strength. Areas west receive much less signal.

Quite the power drop......right now 715pm listening indoors on a portable Panasonic 2400D radio which has good reception and signal is excellent in east Windsor playing the Mamas & Papas into Queen.

Will check again around 10pm for signal report.

Could AM580 lose whatever small listenership they have once folks know about Cool1160??? My answer is Yes

At 730pm noticed decrease in signal with another station just barely in background. But still coming in well if I null Cool1160 I can hear another station will try to hear calls.

I doubt it. Depends on signal both day or night. If they push the stream it could make some difference.

They (CKWW) lost me years ago, I listened more when they were under Bell's ownership.

As for WCXI, if they actually did cut power at 7:15 pm (just tuned in on the Sangean HDR-14 used during tropo events) the signal strength is presently fluctuating between 60-85% indoors. Quality is by far clear to understandable, I don't know how strong skywave is tonight vs usual. Earlier this afternoon was getting max signal on 1160 and almost clear reception indoors with a computer nearby (later plugged in the charger and the 'noisy' charger electronics trashed the signal)

WCXI is a tad weaker than WNZK but WNZK is prone to "noise" interference moreso than WCXI is.

WPON was very faint to non existent (if I was even picking it up), WCAR was faint and weaker than daytime (understandably with lower power at night) and on the verge of not detectable.

EDIT: WYLL has very slightly overtaken WCXI now upon checkng (had WNZK on for 5 minutes) so I think WCXI went to legit night mode and was still in day mode when I wrote this. No strength on the meter now

It’s probably WYLL Chicago you are hearing in the background. They’re 50,000 watts day and night, but switch from two towers to a more directional six.

If 1160 gets some advertising, 580 is done for. Their signal strength over 1160 is northeast in the direction of Port Huron/Sarnia. They would still have the advantage nighttime. As I’ve said before, 580’s playlist is very tight with several repeats in a short span. Hyper targeting Windsor didn’t work, trying to target both has only brought in a few ads.

Throw in 1090 airing 60s and 70s music as well and it’s doubly bad for 580. I can’t see three AM music stations (two owners) having enough of an audience to survive, and it appears Aaron is a better programmer than Al Pervin. To be fair, Pervin has probably four or five hats essentially being a one man band.

Oh, and there’s WPON still playing oldies, but they’re essentially a non factor due to the terrible directional signal outside of northern and western Oakland.

How many markets in this region have as many AM stations playing music? Only Toronto/Hamilton comes to mind off the top of my head.

Took a trip out to Harrow (about 30 minutes from Windsor) and 1090 started to get weak as I got to McGregor and by the time I reached Harrow it was nowhere to be found. However WCXI was loud and clear. So WCAR doesn't reach the county.

WCAR's nighttime coverage is very tightly clamped to just southeast/ south centralOakland county and local coverage does not even make it to Detroit or Windsor at night. Coverage maps from Radio locator are available on Birach's website (link below, scroll down on the page) due to Radio locator still showing it as off the air. I can presently get WCAR in indoors quite weak (30-40%) but better than WCXI which is virtually 0%

Also 99.1 in Shelby Township. I believe Smile owns that one. Some type of a deal was made with Beasley in order to have Smile on WCSX HD 3.

Beasley sold 93.5 to Birach a few months ago for them to translate WNZK. Yes Smile FM owns 99.1

Hear me out-
If anything I would if I was Birach I would try to acquire something from EMF like the Air1106.3 translator, that one would likely be good for WCAR or WCXI. Distance may be a problem and it may need to move to be compliant.

Or do a exchange with Relevant Radio's WKEG and the 4 translators for either WCXI or WCAR (or a full on purchase) and shift one of those 2 (WCXI or WCAR) to WKEG and the 4 translators and give WPON a better signal on either 1160 or 1090 and dump 1460 outright.
