Is it really THAT inconvenient to go to your local bank and make a cash withdrawal? Or use that $100 bill to pay for groceries in the Wal Mart self-check out line and keep the smaller bill change?

I find for me personally I have plenty of easy ways to always have some small bills on-hand.

Again - I get it, if you're going to carry around that 3rd appendage everywhere you go then fair enough. Maybe my original question here should have been, what is the allure of having a 1/2-foot long electronic leash attached to your body at all times?

Because I choose to. Nothing discussed here is a matter of “have to”. I choose to deal with cash and card as little as possible. I’m not gonna deviate from what i normally do just to use that $100 bill. Sounds like you wouldn’t deviate from your habits either.

This is only slightly related to this discussion, but I recently went to my normal ATM and withdrew $100 cash using my debit card because I like to have a nominal amount of cash while on vacation. I was hoping to receive a mix of 5's, 10's, and $20's as normal, but it instead gave me a single $100 bill. Now any recipient of this $100 bill is likely to ask for something smaller - they can't break $100 bill or they don't want it because of the risk of it being fake.

I still have this $100 bill in my wallet after my vacation. I will likely redeposit it. Why did I bother with cash again?

My bank's ATM allows one to select how one receives the cash; i.e., in what denominations ($5, $10, $20, $50, $100) and how many of each until the total requested is reached.

Mine usually does too. It didn’t this time for whatever reason and it’s not the first time.

I usually don’t bother with ATM’s… and cash. In response to bmw, I’m certainly not going inside to withdraw cash when I rarely use it in the first place.

Exactly. Most venues don't even accept cash directly. For example, the West Michigan Whitecaps stadium, LMCU Ballpark, doesn't accept cash for purchases; you must use their machines to exchange your cash for a gift card to use instead. Even their 50/50 is cashless.

You obviously don't get out much. Over half of my transactions are with businesses that do not accept cash as payment. Airlines don't take cash, nor do airports. Concert venues, most hotels, rental cars, plenty of retail and restaurants. I carry cash, but it doesn't get spent, even at farm stands and the two farmer markets I frequent.

No cash=Lower employee theft.
