I have two big issues with AI in its current state given my own use of it:

1 - You can't have any length of a back and forth with it without it blatantly hallucinating and outright making shit up,
2 - It tailors its output to what it thinks you WANT to hear, not necessarily what you NEED to hear.

And when you press it on those 2 points when it happens, it will openly admit to both of those. Essentially, AI is no better than the same echo chamber that exists on social media.

I find the autonomy fears a bit overblown, at least at this point in time.

My experience with using AI chatbots (specifically, Google's Gemeni) for doing legal research is this: It is very good at explaining statutes in plain English and pretty good at taking a set of facts and telling you what legal principles may apply to those facts. It also CAN be good at finding obscure case law, but it also FREQUENTLY makes up fake case laws and also frequently finds accurate statutes but gives you the wrong statute sections/numbers (and sometimes from wrong jurisdictions). So if you're using AI for this - it is great for preliminary research and pointing you in the right direction, but never, EVER rely on any of its statutory or case law citations without doing your own verification first. Any actual licensed attorney that does this and cites fake AI-generated case law or statutes in a formal legal document should be disbarred, IMO.

My organization uses Claude. Depending on the model you use, you get wildly different responses. For our technical staff (engineers and developers), Fable 5 is required, as it handles the technical details and research best. Our analytic staff must use a minimum of Opus 5. The remainder can use a minimum of Sonnet. Our HR likes Sonnet the best, as it has a more personable tone.

We obviously always double/triple check the output before interacting with clients!
