In fact it's a heavier classic hits station. Almost a rock station. Hardly any "oldies" music is played. So my question is what's the difference between cool 1160 and this in terms of format? I thought it was a real oldies station like mentioned at the beginning of this thread. Has anyone else listened to the stream? It's definitely not what I think of when I think "oldies"
My understanding is the oldies will be on 1090, classic hits on 1160. If that's true it's a waste of time. Oldies should be on the better signal and why does Detroit need an AM classic hits station? Actually, 1090 should surrender it's license what a waste of electricity.

There's a whole rabbit hole we can go into about AM stations made useless or irrelevant just due to interference issues or coverage limitations. WCAR is really not that bad, nor is it that great either.

Market-wide, I think WMKM is a big waste of energy due to the extremely directional signal, WDEO between day and night modes is a massive flip (the 105.5 translator, aside from within a few miles of the AM transmitters, is the only consistent signal area of WDEO), WRDT is basically a daytimer to Monroe county simply due to the day and night transmitters' geographical separation. I could go on and on, I know there's a caveat either big or small for almost every AM here and beyond.

WCAR is a cookie cutter AM limited in coverage due to the interference protections it has to follow, but I'm sure the people over at WMKM would be happy to have 1090 AM vs the hyper limited 1440 AM

I guess they could rezone WCAR’s towers for housing if they ever do shut it down, unless Garden City needs more industrial land.

WMKM’s towers are across the road from the Amazon warehouse in Romulus. Considering all of the land near the airport they’re trying to build, not sure how much that spot would be worth. Their signal is indeed limited despite more power than WCAR.

The music is gone from the Cool 1160 stream. In my opinion that was a stupid move to stunt on the stream, apparently what few listeners that were streaming are now gone. Good luck on your after school project.

I will say that this apparently temporary "cool 1160" stream was ran parallel and simultaneous* to Birach's official WCXI 1160 live webcast, that was simulcasting the over the air broadcast. My guess would be that they would likely imminently be pulling the trigger to launch on air and stream it on WCXI's traditional webcast and not on a third party. Unless they had a 30 day free trial and it expired...

Edit: didn't know the doomsday programming was dropped. Reading is fundamental, folks.

I hear “Cars 1090” is back on the air playing oldies music with some cool jingles. Even though the towers are 2 miles from my home, it doesn’t seem to be splattering all over my radio anymore.

Are the jingles the original 1130 WCAR jingles?

I just checked on my radio in the car, absolutely nothing here in Windsor. Nothing whatsoever.

The station does seem significantly weaker than before.

Yes, 1090 is finally back on the air...at about half the range. Still working out some kinks with the transmitter and phasers (something's up with the VSWR apparently). Our chief engineer is back in town for the next two weeks and will work on it with me. A stream for 1090 is coming soon and I'm also going to work on those rotations too because there is a ton of harder rock left over from WPON in there that needs to either go entirely or get night-parted. More oldies are coming, I promise! Oh, and yes, the jingles are from the Giant 1130 days.

1160 is also in the works as well. Hoping to get that back to 15k at the start of next week and get that new format up.

Cool. Looking forward to it. You’ve got a good wide variety of music. Hope you’re successful with it.

I would say WCAR is far less than half the range. I was driving down Michigan Ave from Canton to Dearborn and could barely pick it up. I faintly heard a jingle plus Mouth and MacNeal.

I was in Garden City this afternoon, with 1090’s tower lights in sight, and the signal was womping and fading like a distant station. Hope the signal is adequately fixed for the new format.

Definitely. It's in night pattern, so it's supposed to go directly north. Our STA from the FCC on it expires in mid-november.

Do people like listening to mono music with a lot of interference? They should listen to SW for a really nice "mono fade in and fade out with weird distortion" music.
