The downburst that hit the Orion Twp / Rochester Hills area during the before noon storm today was super impressive. Visibility went down to tens of feet in 65 MPH+ winds for a much longer than normal amount of time for something that intense. Not a very good time to be on a golf course

Dang. I know it was bad along and north of M-59. Peak gusts here were maybe 55 mph with the Noonish storms.

The radar shows numerous super cellular, severe thunderstorms along the I-69 and US 127 corridors right now.

I am concerned about cells in Jackson and Hillsdale counties that could go tornadic soon. Ditto for a cell near Swartz Creek in Genesee County.

Just got through a warning in Washtenaw.

Although the NWS did issue a (too late for the first wave) t-storm watch, overall the Storm Prediction Center really dropped the ball on the threat from these storms. Both in their intensity and coverage.

The level 2 risk area was expanded north to about M-46 shortly after 8AM this morning.

Based on 340,000 statewide power outages heavily concentrated in the southeastern quadrant of the state, I'd say we had enhanced level impacts here.

West of 127, it's been pretty quiet today except for the Reed City, Baldwin and perhaps Big Rapids areas. Folks in Kalamazoo are probably wondering why they were placed in any severe risk outlook (they like GR, Detroit and Flint were in a level 2 risk).

These types of systems are tough to forecast from an exact placement standpoint. I cannot really argue with the level 2 outlook.

Where I think the SPC screwed up was going with a severe thunderstorm watch instead of a tornado watch. Not a gigantic error since any actual tornadoes today were likely EF-0 or low end EF-1 if any actually occurred.

We got brutalized here.

The warning came through on our phones shortly after 3. So, of course, I gather up all the kids and the dogs and make our way downstairs. I'm keeping an eye out through the kitchen window, and decide to go out, have a quick smoke and see how things are doing. It's basically drizzling at this point. So I'm outside and suddenly the wind starts picking up. Bad. I put out my cigarette, shut the garage door and head back in. I'm not even at my bedroom yet and I see the trees bending back and forth. Then the siren started in. I'm back downstairs, the two year old doesn't get what's happening so he's being fidgety, the two older girls are losing their shit because mom isn't home, the dogs are whining and i'm watching the trees (now in the dark) whipped around every which way.

If a tornado did not touch down around here, then we had some serious straight line wind shit happening. I haven't seen it like this since 2019 and even then the trees weren't flying around that much.

Word on the street is there was a touchdown about 5-10 miles away or so (somewhere between Howell and Pinckney). Lots of damage in my neighborhood, whole branches coming down, leaves and debris everywhere. A couple of side streets are shut down, and more businesses were closed, even after the events of last night.

All in all, I'm very blessed, because we suffered no damage and our power stayed on. Usually it goes out when the dog farts too hard. I can hear the gennies running as the streer right behind us is connected to a different set.

Ended up with one pocket of decent damage along my path back from GR so far… Saginaw Highway (business 69 just off the freeway maybe a mile or so)… multiple large trees snapped and a power pole snapped off, a guy hammering a metal roof down, westbound lanes blocked by a tree and the sign for a motel just a frame with the signs themselves across the road. Not sure if it was straight line winds or what. But it was extremely compact damage. No signs of much else except that one couple hundred yard spot. The only other damage of note was coming down Telegraph from Pontiac to Southfield… no lights at Quarton and a side street cautioned off possibly due to a power line and no lights from 12 mile south. Once I got on the service drive toward Lahser it’s been normal.

Tornado confirmed in Marysville Wednesday evening… EF-0 with 75mph winds and just some tree damage. On the ground for 2 minutes and went .35 miles. 175 yards wide.
