106.7 WLLZ quietly segues to mostly 1990s to 2010s rock

Ah, yes. Alice 106.7. The station with the fun imaging, milquetoast music, and boring DJs.

The final year before the rebrand to the shit box known as The Drive, Alice 106.7 actually turned into a very listenable classic rock station. It played the harder edged classic rock WCSX was unwilling to play at the time.

That progress was thrown summarily out the window when 106.7 became The Drive, which blended the music of early Alice with the music of final year Alice. What a fucking awful radio station that was. It lasted about three years.

Mornings sucked, I'll grant that. They did have a couple good jocks, Kevin O'Neill being one. They did get out a good deep cut or lesser know track that WCSX would never play and weren't heard on WRIF as they got picky about their gold.

Jesus Christ radio was boring as hell around here. After DRQ it wasn't very fun anymore. I think 93.9 flipping to the River, 97.1 becoming sports on FM and 105.1 going old school, that's about it.

When compared to the talentless Jade on WRIF, Casey as a DJ doesn't sound half bad.

The last time we had this many rock & alternative stations on the dial at the same time probably was the late 90s.

89X does sound very different than WRIF and WLLZ these days, though. To me, the current day 89X arguably sounds more like 93.9 The River than the 89X that I remember from its prime (early 2000s to early 2010s).

I think 1995 was the pinnacle of it. 88.7, 94.7, 96.3, 101.1, 102.7 were all flavors of rock. By 1999, after the Edge changed format, only 94.7, 88.7 and 101.1 remained. 106.7 didn't show up until September. But there weren't any more current rock stations.

94.7 was playing KISS and a bunch of other old shit. Planet 96-3 and 89X were the only redeemable stations for people my age after the Edge(the station not the dude from U2) changed formats.

Greater Media Detroit didn't give it enough time to get better numbers, Instead they decided to go Classic Soul which was a great format as well but typical Greater Media procedure let's change the format again. Next 105.1 becomes Magic 105.1 The New Home for Jim Harper Mornings. And the rest is history.
