Week of 7/19

Unread post by MWmetalhead »

Model data is showing a strong upper level low that will be hesitant to eject near Ottawa (Euro model) or near the Maritime Provinces (GFS model) in the mid to possibly late week period.

I'm glad I'm not forecasting for New England, because a wide range of temps are possible there with this feature if it materializes (ranging from a bit below normal to far below normal).

For those of us in lower Michigan, the general pattern will be near normal to perhaps times of moderately below normal afternoon temps. The upper peninsula will likely see some days where many locales do not get out of the 60s.

This coming week also looks to be quite dry, which could prove to be a major issue for my area, where signs of abnormally dry conditions have begun to emerge (i.e. pockets of yellowing grass and some crinkling leaves). The northern half of lower Michigan, the upper peninsula, and west central lower Michigan have a good chance of rain and thunderstorms from Monday night into Tuesday (some possibly heavy), with iffy chances for SE Michigan. After that, the next chance of rainfall does not arrive until Friday night or Saturday, and if we do see rain, totals will likely be under a quarter inch.

The Gaylord office of the NWDS must have psychic powers, because they are currently forecasting a 100% chance of rain for most of their forecast area for Monday night. What a bunch of fucking clowns.

The GFS is showing a brutal heat wave for the western half of the United States whereas the Euro is showing above normal temps but nothing extreme. Both models show high temps mostly in the 70s over the wildfire ravaged regions of NW Ontario and SE Manitoba.

My forecasted high temps for Detroit and for Grand Rapids:
7/19: 78, 81
7/20: 80, 80
7/21: 83, 82
7/22: 75, 77
7/23: 78, 78
7/24: 82, 80
7/25: 81, 82
7/26: 80, 82

GFS model run from 2AM this morning; first number is projected 5PM temp for Detroit and second number is projected 5PM temp for Grand Rapids:

7/19: 81, 84
7/20: 81, 81
7/21: 86, 79
7/22: 76, 76
7/23: 82, 79
7/24: 86, 80
7/25: 75, 80
7/26: 70, 78 (only 59 for Saginaw and 108 for Grand Forks, ND; I suspect the GFS is "out to lunch" on these predictions!)

Euro-AIFS (Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System) model run from 2AM this morning; first number is projected 2PM temp for Detroit and second number is projected 2PM temp for Grand Rapids (I was unable to obtain 5PM data from this source):

7/19: 77, 80
7/20: 79, 79
7/21: 85, 80
7/22: 72, 74 (only 65 in London, Ontario)
7/23: 76, 77
7/24: 79, 80
7/25: 83, 84
7/26: 84, 83

It's chilly this morning! This is the first time I've worn a hoodie in weeks.

A pair of tornado warnings in the southwestern U.P. right now. Iron River and Crystal Falls is under one.
The Gaylord office of the NWDS must have psychic powers, because they are currently forecasting a 100% chance of rain for most of their forecast area for Monday night. What a bunch of fucking clowns.
The NWDS office in Gaylord has lowered rainfall probability in most of their county warning area from 100 percent to 60 percent for tonight. I guess they don't possess psychic powers after all! LOL

Great news this morning! The Canadian fires have been substantially reduced from flooding rains yesterday!

The bad: Fires from Oregon and Washington are ruining air quality for the west. https://www.yahoo.com/news/weather-news ... p_catchall

The silver lining is Oregon fires will be high clouds for us and not surface level smoke.

The only real question is whether it rains in their area. If so they were 100% correct. If not… well… I’d love a job I could get wrong 100% of the time and still have.

I sure could use some rain. Zero rainfall last night here. I've only picked up a quarter inch of rainfall in the past two weeks plus.

The NWDS is forecasting a 60% chance of rain today for much of SE Michigan.

I suspect many areas will see nothing.

Nada here. No storms last night or today. Not complaining. Just surprised.

I finally got some rain! A brief but intense squall just rolled through. Didn't see any lightning.

0.35" so far. Most of that fell in 5 minutes' time!

The Detroit weather radio (KEC63) is offline. Fortunately there isn’t any crazy weather today.
Due to a telecomunications problem all NOAA All-Hazards Weather
Radios in Southeast Michigan are currently off line. The weather
radios affected include: KEC-63 broadcasting out of Southfield, KIH-
29 broadcasting out of Clio, WNG-647 broadcasting out of Adrian, WNG-
582 broadcasting out of Sandusky, MI and WNG-701 broadcasting out of
Bad Axe. Efforts are ongoing to restore service.
Incidentally If it’s off the air how can the computer voice be telling me that when I tune in? Is there some sort of backup thing at the transmitter site?
