I turned to WDIV/4 and they were airing their usual replay of the 11 O'clock News. WWJ/62 and WJBK/2 were airing regular dumb late night programming...all during the passing of a tornado warning in the downriver area! What the actual f__k! >:
Granted, this was shortly after the major danger passed across the river into Ontario, but the watches were still in effect. Did anyone here tune into our local channels during the height of the actual tornado warning?
Xfinity customer here. I was watching CBS/ch 9 when the Washtenaw Co. warning came up. They put their warnings up by putting a red box around the network program and scrolling something very tiny at the bottom of the screen listing the affected counties. I switched to NBC/ch 4 and didn't see any break in broadcast but saw the 4Warn weather symbol in the upper right of my screen. Rich Luterman and Alan Longstreet broke into the regular program on Fox 2 and followed radar indicated rotations from west of Ann Arbor, right on thru Chelsea and into Wayne County when the second warning was issued for that county. They stayed on air until the storms had crossed over into the Windsor area then went back to regular programming. Since ABC/ch 7 isn't available due to the Scripps dispute, I can't comment if channel 7 had any response.

I use a TV antenna. I was going back and forth between 2, 4, and 7. They all had live coverage during the tornado warning. I went back to bed after the warning had passed, but while they were all still on the air. 9 from Windsor had nothing.

I had 7 going myself… the coverage was pretty good I thought.

When I tuned in to KEC63 Weather Radio for a few minutes, most information was for Monroe County, while Wayne County info was minimal. But I tuned in probably 1/2-3/4 of the way through the warning for my area.

Thank you, folks. I guess my initial indignation was premature.

60 percent chance of severe thunderstorm watch issuance for portions of SE Michigan (mostly south of Eight Mile Rd.) later this afternoon:

https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0446.html

4, 7 and 62 were great with live coverage last night.

Fox 2 was suffering from tech and/or power issues for a spell. They were also a bit late in going wall to wall on the Washtenaw tornado warning (but did have excellent warning detail on screen).

The red rim on 62 and 50 and lack of a concise watch / warning icon bugs the crap out of me.

7 is almost as obnoxious as 62 & 50 in terms of obtrusive visuals but at least only has the rim on three sides of the screen (7 also has a concise watch / warning map so viewers don't have to wait minutes on end for info pertaining to their locale).

Severe thunderstorm watch has been issued. The only Michigan counties included are Monroe and Lenawee.

A small but nasty storm is moving into the city of Monroe.

A severe cluster of storms is located just SW of Bryan, OH. This could move into the Toledo area later.

The Montcalm County tornado - fortunately in the middle of nowhere - was on the ground continuously for almost 19 miles.

Here is the EF-1 tornado report from the Otsego and Plainwell area. The damage in downtown Otsego was from thunderstorm winds, not the tornado itself.

EF-1 with max 100 mph winds. 16 mile path. Looks like it lifted very near the WVFM tower site.

Pair of EF-1’s in Southeast Michigan last night. The first touched down near Barton Hills and lifted in Downtown Ann Arbor at 4th and William. 1.71 mile path length and 110mph winds.

The second one was in Melvindale, traveled .30 miles and had 95mph winds.

That Ann Arbor tornado was over a quarter mile wide! That is a healthy one. The radar couplet looked healthy near the M-14 / I-94 junction, so I'm not surprised there was a touchdown that affected western Ann Arbor.

The rotation definitely looked weaker from downtown and eastward. The funnel lifted and dissipated maybe a quarter to half mile west of Main St.

NWS did a very good job with the tornado warnings in our region.

NWS hasn't issued any warnings for St. Clair or Macomb yet. It's a borderline situation.

Don't be surprised if eastern Jackson or NW Washtenaw see a tornado warning shortly. I see a couple areas where rotation could become a hazard.
Posted the above at 1:13a last night. The rotation I saw ultimately led to the tornado that hit western Ann Arbor.

Touchdowns also occurred near Bridgeport in Saginaw County, Albee Township in Saginaw County, and just outside Durand in Shiawassee County.

The Albee Township tornado was a half mile wide!

Nearly all of Metro Detroit dodged a bullet. Minimal damage in Oakland and Macomb; only some pockets of damage in Wayne County. The Melvindale tornado was extremely brief and weak.

That Brighton to Jackson squall line segment is what caused nearly all the confirmed SVR reports in Metro Detroit as it tracked ESE. The part of the line that caused the tornadic activity in Saginaw County weakened significantly by the time it reached southern Oakland County.

Storm Prediction Center is advising of an isolated flash flooding risk overnight across much of southern and central lower Michigan, excluding Metro Detroit.

Storms are beginning to increase in number and intensity along the Lake Michigan shoreline. There is also an established blob of strong storms mid-lake.

I'm a Comcast/Xfinity customer currently without WXYZ/7 during their contract dispute.
They were my source throughout the event last night. I recommend everyone subscribe. They were the MSC I was referencing yesterday.
