Delta flight crash landing at Toronto Pearson Int'l Airport

Unread post by MWmetalhead »

Raw video of the landing is available online. I won't post it here.

My conclusion is the crash landing was mostly or entirely due to pilot error.

The front of the aircraft was tilted too high and the tail tilted too low on approach. The bottom of the tail of the aircraft made contact with the runway at a very high rate of speed before any wheels had touched. This caused the plane to smoke / combust and caused the plane to flip.

Saw the video from 3 different angles on the news, including one up close. Watching the plane flip was scary. After watching it, if someone isn’t a believer in seat belts in either cars or aircraft’s, they should be as it’s the primary reason why no one died in this bad landing.

What video are you looking at?

The angles I've seen show he first hit the right, then left gear hard. It seems to collapse, then things go to shit.

It doesn't seem like he was forward too fast, just dropping elevation too quickly.

It looked to me initially as if the tail hit first, but upon rewatching, you are absolutely right that one or more of the landing gears may have collapsed upon making contact with the ground.

Here's some really good reporting on the Delta crash. I wish we had a new source in the US as comprehensive.

That is from CBC. In the current election campaign the Conservative Party, which is leading in the polls, is running on a promise to abolish the CBC.

It is a public Corporation, independent of the Government but receives public funding from the Government

Interesting… what is their complaint about its existence?

They're just free enterprisers, opposed to public ownership of anything. At one time Canada had several public corporations. Canadian National Railway, Air Canada, Petro-Canada - - - - -. But successive, right wing Liberal and Conservative governments have sold them off and privatized them.

About all that remain are CBC, Canada Post and Atomic Energy of Canada.
