Low tech hotels

Unread post by Matt »

I recently stayed at a decent Marriott property that instead of offering either a wireless phone charger or a plug in right on the night stand has a useless clock with a nightlight like it was 1988. Can you believe that shit? It seems like hotels would want to acknowledge that no one with any level of intelligence wants a worthless, light up the room clock in 2024 (almost 2025).

No USB port on the bedside lamp?
Sometimes gotta have a backup when traveling.

My hotel essentials are ice machine, fridge, microwave, iron-ironing board. Those I can’t bring backup on.

Many of the hotels I stay in have clocks with built in USB charging. The desk lamp usually does too.

I’ve brought a portable plug in cooler if I know the room I am staying does not have a fridge. Works in the car too.

My main criteria for a hotel are clean, well maintained rooms and a reasonable room rate. They can be as hi tech or or as low tech as they want to be as long as the lights and the plumbing work and there are no bed bugs.

I carry all my tech gear with me. A radio, a portable 12V cooler, a couple of dollar store night lights, a flashlight and a clock.

If my wife is traveling with me, I also take along a head lamp. If she goes to bed early, we can turn out the lights and I can stay up and read

I don't care if the room doesn't have a TV. I never watch it.

A CLOCK? Do you mean a Glock? Surely, you're not lugging around something you could see on your phone?!??!!???

Yes, I'm lugging a clock around. I can't lug my phone with me because it's fastened securely to the kitchen wall.

My phone is in my pocket, like a normal person. I can't imagine gluing it to my wall.

Carrying a phone in your pocket is abnormal. Most of the normal people I see, have it glued to the palm of their hand.

Most hotel rooms already have a phone. Other than calling down to the desk, I never use it.

Last weekend I went to Green Bay for a Packers game and the room at the Quality Inn I stayed in seemed to date from the early 2000s. Alarm clock with AM/FM radio, landline phone with data port even though the place had perfectly functional wifi. Room was fine as far as being clean and comfortable, I was just amused by that.

I'm with TT on this one - I'd much rather see a phone glued to a wall than to someone's hand.

What's next? Everyone wearing diapers because using a stationary toilet is too much of an invoncenience?
