Hulu + Live TV discounted price for 3 months

A place to discuss broadband, streaming video, cable, and satellite services (not programming). Bitch about your crappy cable, satellite or streaming video provider here! This is also the place to talk about channel line-ups, packages, and special offers.

Hulu + Live TV discounted price for 3 months

Unread post by MWmetalhead »

A new promotion started in recent days:

New subscribers to Hulu + Live TV (which also includes Disney+ and ESPN+) can get the service for $59.99 a month for 3 months.

Normal price is $82.99 a month.

Do you know when this offer expires? I think I heard an ad that said November 19. Not a bad deal at all, considering I was paying almost twice as much for Fubo.

Thanks again, MW, for letting us know about that deal. For anyone else interested, better sign up by this Tuesday, November 19 at 12 noon pacific/3:00 pm eastern time. Even if you like sports but aren't into all the Disney stuff, still a great plan, especially if you're looking for ESPN networks and ESPN + in one package.

Several things I'll note regarding Hulu + Live TV:
- It lacks the multi-view capabilities (i.e. watch multiple channels at the same time) that YouTube TV offers
- You get MLB Network as part of the standard package but not NBA TV, which is not offered at all. With YouTube TV, the reverse is true.
- Hulu + Live TV does not offer BBC America, BBC News, IFC, Sundance or AMC. It does, however, offer History, A&E and Lifetime, which are all missing from YouTube TV.
- NFL RedZone requires the sports add-on, which is an extra $9.99 per month.

I am on the fence as to whether I'll try it. I'm leaning toward doing so. I have YouTube TV and pay $72.99 per month. I do miss A&E.

I wonder what constitutes a new subscriber?
I was with Hulu for a couple years then switched to YouTube at some point awhile back but can't remember if its been 8 months or 18 months .

I just signed up for Hulu + Live TV.

Channel to channel navigation is better in YouTube TV. I cannot use the channel up or down keys with my remote when using Hulu + Live TV.

I can also use my smartphone as a remote with YouTube TV. No such functionality exists with Hulu + Live TV. Both services allow you to access programming, including live TV, on your smartphone or computer.

Moving from channel to channel results in a few seconds of delay on my 2016 econobox LG TV in the basement, which is a bit annoying. Navigation moves much faster on my Samsung QT80 in the living room; there is a one second delay when loading a new channel. I've not tried on my cheap Insignia in the bedroom yet.

Another thing to keep in mind: Hulu + Live TV only allows two simultaneous streams under standard pricing. Simultaneous streams on unlimited devices is an additional $9.99 a month.

Update:
The Hulu app works well on my Insignia smart TV (Roku OS). Navigation / menu responsiveness is as good or a bit better than YTTV on this unit.

So, performance varies quite a bit depending on make & model of your TV.

The thing about Hulu is that they have an obscene amount of ads. Paramount + does too. And yes, Prime added ads this year, but I find they are usually 1:30 per 30 minutes of viewing which is tolerable.
They/them, non-binary and proud.

Remember that “2000 Mules” was concocted by a circus of elephants.
The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

I was much younger then, in the 70s, but if I remember initially cable TV , to compete and stand out from OTA TV, was marketed as ad-free, mostly HBO and a handful of movie channels.

Netflix was ad-free, now there’s ads unless you pay the premium. Same for youtube.

That’s the market. Nothings free, they get you hooked, then up the price. If it’s free, you are their product.

How things circle back.

Kind of like paying for bottled water in plastic bottles, bad for the environment, when it comes out of the tap virtually free.

Advantages for YouTube TV over Hulu + Live TV:

1. On Hulu + Live TV, when a new channel loads, the picture quality is initially subpar. It takes a few seconds for true HD quality to load. No such issue exists with YouTube TV.

2. On the Samsung Q80T in my living room, when I turn on my TV for the day, it automatically takes me to the last channel viewed on YouTube TV (if that happens to be what I last watched). When using Hulu + Live TV, I have to open the home screen menu, then relaunch the app, then go to the live guide.

3. With YouTube TV, I can hide channels I never watch from the live guide and can also rearrange the order in which the channels appear. The above can be done using their smartphone or PC app; the settings are then permanently saved for all devices. Also, the major network local channels (2, 4, 7, 50, 62) appear in that order by default in the live guide. No customization of live guide channel sequencing of any kind is available with Hulu + Live TV.

4. As noted earlier, YouTube TV has multi-channel view capabilities, allowing one to watch two, three or even four video streams on one screen at the same time, with easy ability to toggle audio between streams. Hulu + Live TV lacks this functionality.

So, overall, I find the YouTube TV experience to be much better than Hulu + Live TV.

If you like receiving on demand content library recommendations upon app launch and if either MLB Network, A&E or History are must-haves, then Hulu + Live TV may be preferable.

For me, I've determined the $59.99/ month promo price is not enough to counteract the shortcomings versus YouTube TV. Therefore, I'll be cancelling Hulu + Live TV.

Thanks for that info. I haven't played around much yet with Hulu but will probably keep it through the deal and cancel after the Super Bowl. I mainly plan to use it for networks like FS1, ESPN and ESPN+. I'm comparing it to Fubo, which I had before. The only reason I paid the high price for Fubo was to watch Cleveland Indians/Guardians and some Detroit Tigers games. Once baseball season ended, it was time to cancel Fubo. One more observation about Hulu, Scripps networks such as: ION, DEFY, LAFF, ION Mystery, are not available on that platform though they do have Scripps locals like WXYZ 7 Detroit.

YouTubeTV carries WXYZ, ION, Scripps News and CourtTV.

Hulu+Live TV channel loading is working much better for me today for some reason. HD picture quality is instantaneous upon loading, and channel loading is only taking about one second.

If you know anyone who is blind or visually impaired, I found that Hulu works very well with Amazon's "VoiceView" for their Fire TVs. I had a lot of trouble using Fubo with Voiceview so Hulu being very accessible is a nice change. I have not tried it with YTTV, but I would guess it's quite accessible to the blind user as well, since Google created a screen reader for their products many years ago.
