Speaking of Colthorp . . . he's good at where he is in the mornings. He doesn't have what it takes to be a serious newscaster. Too much smiling. He willl always be a Jimmy Olsoen and not a Clark Kent type.

I will miss Devin. Love his newscasts, even though I'm on the fringe of WDIV's viewing area, Sylvania Ohio/southern Monroe county Michigan. Hoping the new guy is half as good as Devin to get me to tune away from Toledo stations to Detroit's local 4. Hard to believe this will be Devin's final Thanksgiving parade.
Re: Devin Scillian
Ty Steele was on the noon show today with Rhonda Walker. Jason Colthrop was hosting a political town hall at Oakland University.

I watched Ty yesterday and thought he did a great job. Management did well in choosing Devin's replacement. They acted fast knowing that December was around the corner. They realized they had nobody from within that could measure up.

I didn't see all the coverage on this, so I apologize if I'm wrong, but don't be surprised if he does more of the Thanksgiving Parade in the future. Carmen stayed on after retiring.80sTalkRadioFan wrote: ↑Sun Oct 27, 2024 6:02 pm I will miss Devin. I saw an advertisement today on WDIV that starting Dec.16 Ty Steele will be joining Kimberly Gill.
That’s it. I am done with WDIV news.

Re: Devin Scillian
The parade broadcast is unwatchable. It's a nonstop advertiser ass kissing session.
America's parade is the one in New York. Most people in Michigan who live outside of the Detroit television market aren't even aware that Detroit has a parade annually on Thanksgiving. They channel surf, happen across our town's parade, and have zero idea from where it originates in many instances.
It is the DETROIT parade, it is not "America's" parade.
Someone should ask Graham Media Group or The Parade Company if they are embarrassed by their own city. Why not use the parade as a tourism tool by conspicuously letting viewers know it is a DETROIT event and branding it as such?
We don't have the America Red Wings, the America Tigers or the America Lions. Why can't Detroit be part of the parade's core identity?

Trump is too stupid to know what "reciprocal" means.
Re: Devin Scillian
I did some digging on when and why they started calling it America’s Thanksgiving parade and came up empty handed. I know it is the second largest in the country behind the NY one. It also gets distributed to a bunch of other local markets kinda like the Mag Mile Light Festival special WLS does or the Dream Cruise special that 7 does.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 7:39 am The parade broadcast is unwatchable. 283,000,000 Americans didn't vote for Trump.

Re: Devin Scillian
Does he have Detroit roots?
There are several large cities with Thanksgiving parades, including Philadelphia, Chicago, and Houston.
Some info:

I found dozens upon dozens of posts and reports about the Macy's parade in New York; it was difficult to find info about the other parades when using "Thanksgiving Day Parades" as my query.
The Macy's parade this year drew 31.3 million viewers on TV, a new record.

Re: Devin Scillian
I think Philadelphia has the best parade. Macy’s is just a bit too corporate and too rehearsed for my tastes. Philly is quality without taking itself too seriously. It’s more focused on having fun.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Nov 30, 2024 9:43 am

I think Chicago must put 95% of their parade budget into the Mag Mile parade, because the actual Thanksgiving Day parade on State Street is surprisingly low-key. Very few balloons. I’ve literally seen dump trucks and construction equipment be part of the procession. I always find it difficult to believe that this is the parade of the 3rd-largest city in USA.
Re: Devin Scillian
Does anyone remember when, I think it was CBS in the 1980’s, used to show parades from around America on Thanksgiving morning?
If memory serves me correctly, I think they had live look-ins on Detroit and New York. Rounded out with pre-recorded portions from Toronto and Honolulu. Maybe another city as well.
