Vilade played first base in the second game. He’s put up some nice numbers and shown some speed. I wouldn’t mind seeing him getting a longer look with the Tigers. I do think he may be a decent bench guy if given the chance. He’s been playing more second and third in Toledo obviously something Hinch loves.

Zach McKinstry was tonight's pitching ace. Rangers 9, Tigers 1.

Still, taking 2 of 3 from the defending world champions on the road isn't bad.

Unfortunately the division is a LOT tougher than expected and is the AL Comedy Central no more. Minnesota is still solid, the preseason hype behind KC proved justified and Cleveland is somehow BETTER without Francona than worse, at least so far.

You always look for improvement, and it was encouraging to see McKinstry lower his ERA from 54.00 to 18.00. All while throwing four curves that ranged in speed from 37 to 42 MPH (https://www.espn.com/mlb/playbyplay/_/gameId/401569394).

Quite a night for young Mr. Malloy, who carried the offense for the team with his first MLB hit and broke up a perfect game. Great TV shot of his parents.

With all the talk about Spencer Torkelson's disappointing season, it's interesting to see that his draft class hasn't really been that successful:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/draf ... year_round

https://www.baseball-reference.com/draf ... year_round

In the first two rounds, only Jordan Westburg (Orioles), Bobby Miller (Dodgers) and Logan Allen (Indians) jump out. But 28 teams passed on all three of them. And all three teams have a better development record than the Tigers in recent years.

You have to wonder how that crazy year of 2020 affected the development and evaluation of players.

Oh, the minors being shut down in 2020 threw player evaluation and scouting off for sure. But the MLB draft has always been somewhat of a crapshoot. It's really not like the NFL, NBA or NHL drafts.

The way the Tigers score runs for Skubal reminds me of '68 when the Tigers averaged over six runs a game for Denny McLain on his way to a 31-6 season.

Javier Baez is on the 10-day injured with lumbar spine inflammation.

Ryan Kreidler is up from Toledo.

Carrying around a grossly overpaid contract can hurt ones back.

Kreidler is not the answer, but he’s the obvious choice given his position. Eddys Leonard isn’t ready. The other option is call up Jung (his bat is about ready, glove not so much), put him at third, and play Urshela at short (he has some experience).

In this video, replace "Oz" with "Scott Harris" and the reason for the Tigers' current status becomes more clear.

But he makes quick snaps with his glove!

Javier Báez's quick tags at second base have become must-watch fielding for his teammates and manager AJ Hinch, who marvel at Báez's skill.

Dillon Dingler hitting over .300 in Toledo with power. Nah, can't use that bat when you have Kelly and future HOFer Rogers.
