His Night Music show from about 1990 was one of the coolest music shows ever. He had musicians from different genres, and sometimes they played together at the end of the show.

If you happened to tune into CBS's broadcast of Billy Joel's concert in New York a few weeks ago, that was Sanborn on Sax.
Within the first bars of Letterman's opening music I could tell if Sanborn was sitting in with the band that night. Such a distinctive sound and groove. We lost a good one.

I saw most of the show (almost twice), but must have missed Sanborn. All of the sax I saw was being handled by Joel's regular sax player, Mark Rivera.Lester The Nightfly wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 10:41 pmIf you happened to tune into CBS's broadcast of Billy Joel's concert in New York a few weeks ago, that was Sanborn on Sax.

Re: RIP David Sanborn
I always wondered who played this kick ass sax in this little nugget of music legendary theme composer Edd Kalhoff wrote for CBS. I hate to admit the geekiness of it but I'd put this right up there with Phil Woods one-take solo in Steely Dan's "Doctor Wu" in terms of leaving an indelible mark on a recording.

This funky little number crossed over to Billboard's AC chart in 1987 and also got CHR airplay on Detroit's Z95.5. It's "Chicago Song" (#25 AC).
