I can't think of a single song of his I like, or even tolerate.

There are other artists from that era who I've heard had similar outbursts. Chrissie Hynde comes to mind.

Don't want the audience yelling for Jack and Diane (or Born in the USA, or Roxanne, to name two other artists I've heard accused of stuff like this)? THEN DON'T FUCKING GO ON TOUR.

That people would spend more than about $50 on one of these shows is why these guys get a disproportionate sense of self-worth.

I am not fan of the guy and he owed it to customers to finish the show.
But the number one person to blame is the heckler in my opinion.
I haven't been to a concert in decades but I think telling a story on stage is not uncommon. Further more the play list is set before the show starts so telling a story isn't exactly in lieu of a song.
So the heckler is essentially saying get the songs over as fast as you can because I want to leave.

Something I found noteworthy was Carlene Carter as his opening act. Nothing against her, but she hasn't been relevant in years...makes me wonder if 'ol John has burned a lot of bridges among his peers

She's the daughter of June Carter Cash (Mrs. Johnny Cash) and her first husband, Carl Smith. She had a number of country hits back in the 80's. If I were her, I'd steer clear of Mellencamp going forward.
