To completely understand the reason why WEYI-WSMH is where it is right now, you have to understand its owners, David ‘lover of prostitutes’ Smith and his only black friend, Armstrong Williams.

They did the same dog and pony show when Sinclair bought WEYI from Barrington. Smith, Williams and a contingent of people sucking up to the two stood in the WEYI newsroom and told everyone that they all now worked for Smith and job one was to make him money.

Fast forward about 7 years, now WEYI doesn’t have enough people to put on newscasts.

If you don’t think David Smith will bleed the Baltimore Sun dry — take a look at his disastrous ownership of Bally Sports.

David Smith bought the Baltimore Sun personally— as opposed to having “Sinclair Inc” — purchase the newspaper… so I think that’s how he’s getting around the FCC’s antiquated ban on cross ownership of TV stations and newspapers in the same market.

Just like ownership concentration rules in broadcasting, where broadcasters -- especially Sinclair -- use either shell companies or individuals to look separate on paper, while in actuality is owned by the company flaunting the regulations.

No doubt with Smith "personally" buying the Sun, he'll probably have the Sinclair cabal run it, just like with their stations.

The fact there is one reason and only one reason David Smith bought the Baltimore Sun. That’s because he wants to control the media narrative in his hometown. He will use the Sun to push his editorial bent. It is that simple. He bought it because he can.

The article talks about ATSC 3.0. The fact is Sinclair has been broadcasting NextGen TV for several years without success. You don’t need the newspaper for so-called hyperlocal news and advertising. That can be better done by TV stations who already have the workflow of producing video news stories. All Smith would have to do is hire more MMJs at his barely above poverty starting wages.

Phil Kurtz then goes on to say that Sinclair SVP of “News” Scotty Livingston would like to embed reporters more deeply into communities to “generate stories that speak better to the people who live there.” That’s bullsh*t. Tell me one Sinclair market where that’s happening. You can’t because that’s not what they want to do. In fact, I can name a dozen Sinclair markets like Flint and Toledo where they aren’t embedding reporters — rather they are shutting down entire newsrooms.

Interesting development… Baltimore Schools have subpoenaed Sinclair board chairman David Smith in a lawsuit.

It’s interesting that the Baltimore Sun is reporting on it… but conveniently put the bad news against its new owner behind a paywall.

In another article, Smith lapdog and Baltimore Sun & WEYI owner Armstrong Williams declares he’ll make whatever changes he wants because he’s now in charge.
