I just heard a newsreader say it is 91 degrees at Metro Airport.

Just one problem - it's only 88 degrees there.

Why are they reading fake temperatures on the air???

What readings were you using to compare? Could they be using the heat index? However, I wouldn't be surprised if they were misreporting it. If it boils it leads. Two hot days in a cool Summer isn't much.

I'm using the hourly weather roundup straight from NOAA.

The heat index at Metro at top of hour was 94 degrees.

No one is lying to you. Temps vary depending on the source. It just depends on what weather page the anchor has open on a desktop. It could be AP, weather.com, accuweather etc. what the app on their iphone says. Its not perfect science.

There is only one official reporting weather station at Detroit Metro Airport. Maybe someone's backyard thermometer on Weather Underground in Romulus was used as the source? Those purported temps were certainly not stale temps from the official DTW weather station, as it did not crack 90 there today. This is now the third forecasted heat wave in a row where DTW failed to hit 90 a single time.

During the one AccuWeather cut-in I heard just after 3PM where the forecaster (as opposed to the anchor) mentioned current temps, I am happy to report the proper readings were given for City Airport and for Metro Airport.

Official high at Metro was 89 today. City Airport topped out at 92.

Pellston and TVC tied for hottest temp at 94!!! Even Houghton in the NW U.P. reached 90 today.

The very moist soil layer in western Wayne County has definitely served to surpress high temps at Metro by two or three degrees these past several days.

Grand Rapids has had far more 90+ days than DTW this summer, which is very unusual.

For 14 years, I have been reading weather a few mornings each week from one side of Traverse City (49684) while a cohort has been reading weather using 49686. Most often the temps are off by a couple of degrees. I don't think there is an official temperature.

Half the schools up here don't have A/C. It was a miserable first day for some of the kids.

They lie with locations too. O'Neil Stevens said in at least two traffic reports that an accident on Telegraph and Sigler Road is just north of the Michigan-Ohio line. No, it isn't. It's not far SW from Flat Rock. He's off by about 20 miles.
