Boblo Boat Documentary: Watch the special live Sunday night on Local 4
Re: Boblo Boat Documentary: Watch the special live Sunday night on Local 4
Any online rerun of it? Didn't see your post until now.
The box that many broadcasters won’t look outside of was made in 1969 and hasn’t changed significantly since.

It was truly awful for someone that is looking for lighthearted television viewing.
Very little about the boats and Bob-lo Island vs. a biography of the people trying to restore the Ste Claire (good people, but I just don't care about their personal lives).
The show made the restoration controversial because racism and Detroit's neighborhoods have been neglected.
I didn't make it through the entire thing because I'm exhausted being told to feel guilty about everything.

Did it mention the riot that happened on one of the boats on the way back one day? I was on that boat as a young teenager and it was a pretty scary scene. My girlfriend at the time and I just found a corner somewhere, curled up in it and let the knuckleheads do their thing.

At first I was disappointed that I missed it, but after reading your post maybe it was good that I did miss it!! I had seen one advertisement for it and was hoping to watch it but forgot about it.Robert Faygo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 10:23 pmIt was truly awful for someone that is looking for lighthearted television viewing.

Those boats are in no way a warm soft fond remembrance of days past because for older black citizens of Detroit, they represent segregation. Segregation that was shamelessly defended to the bitter end with court battles and even after losing, ignoring the requirement to permit passage to black citizens.Robert Faygo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 10:23 pm

Oh give it a rest drama queen, no one is telling you how you should feel. This white persecution fetish that pops up whenever uncomfortable moments in history are discussed *IS* exhausting. Just come to terms with it and move on, ya know, be an adult.I didn't make it through the entire thing because I'm exhausted being told to feel guilty about everything.

I had seen it originally when shown in various theaters and was also disappointed for this reason. Not what I expected at all. It did help me understand why the Ste Claire is in the situation it is in and why you need at least a few knowledgable people on staff and an actual plan for such an endevor. Maybe these things exist(existed) but sure didn't seem like it.Robert Faygo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 16, 2023 10:23 pm

Thankfully the rioters were not attacking us or anything they were pretty much just vandalizing the boat, being stupid and running around like crazy people. A minute or so after it started you could tell the captain had been notified and you could feel the boat go into "high speed" mode. The engines were humming, what little security they had were chasing people down and there was really not much for us to do except wait it out.Rate This wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 6:54 pmWhy… fight back of course.dial-it-in wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 6:58 amOK, tough guy.Neckbeard wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2023 4:38 amDid she sing this to you while you were curled up?dial-it-in wrote: ↑Mon Jul 17, 2023 8:19 amDid it mention the riot that happened on one of the boats on the way back one day? Re: Boblo Boat Documentary: Watch the special live Sunday night on Local 4
If I remember correctly the ride to Boblo was about an hour and a half. I'd say we made it back to the Detroit dock in about half an hour to 45 minutes; thats how intensely the captain was pushing those engines. I dont know what sparked it but it was a wild scene: chairs being thrown, fights, the rioters basically breaking anything they could (Brilliant, you know? We're in the middle of the fucking river and you want to destroy the boat?)and security whacking people with their clubs. Thankfully Detroits finest were waiting at the dock and escorted everyone off the boat. We had to answer some questions and I believe a week or two later Boblo was shut down.Rate This wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 8:55 pmHow did it end?dial-it-in wrote: ↑Thu Jul 20, 2023 8:44 pmThankfully the rioters were not attacking us or anything they were pretty much just vandalizing the boat, being stupid and running around like crazy people.
