ATSC 3.0

Unread post by ReallyStoked »

I was an announcement on Fox 66, WSMH that indicated The CW 46, WBSF is adding a ATSC 3.0 signal on March 15th. Does anyone know if any of the other Sinclair affiliated stations in the Flint/Saginaw/Bay City market also adding ATSC 3.0 signals at the same time? Seems like all the Detroit stations collaborate to bring ATSC 3.0 at the same time, so are the stations up here doing the same thing?

Yes. The word on the street is tech gurus from WJRT and WNEM have been in talks for several weeks with the Pierson Road/Sinclair engineering team (WBSF is the designated local ATSC 3.0 transmitting site) about a unified 3.0 launch on March 15th.

No doubt as in the case with WMYD, WBSF would host 3.0 signals for themselves and the Big 4 affiliates, while the 1.0 signals of The CW and Charge would be hosted by other stations (they currently simulcast WEYI on 46.2).

WBSF and WEYI appear to be off right now. There's a signal, but nothing coming through. Are they already messing around with ATSC 3.0, or something else going on?

I reported the outage on their Facebook pages, as they wouldn't even answer their phones!, and they are back up and running again at 1pm.

Here's their reply:

Hello Michael! Work was being completed which interrupted the signal. You should be able to receive WBSF and WEYI now.

I use a 1992 Zenith CRT TV with a digital converter. Will I need to get another digital converter box?

Yes, IF you intend on receiving ATSC 3.0 signals. The only available 3.0 tuner right now outside of some expensive tv sets, is the Hd Homerun 4k devices.

Though Tablo announced a 4 tuner 1.0/3.0 drv is coming out in Spring

Unified launch at WBSF? Does that mean there will eventually be sharing of the same tower and/or frequency?

This is happening tomorrow, 3/15 10am~. WBSF converts to the ATSC 3.0 lighthouse. Wnem, Wjrt, and WEYI is joining them. CHARGE! is moving to WSMH 16.7 (but will still use its virtual number of 46.3): https://youtu.be/iqeR9lWuOkQ

Although this is 600 kW Maximum, it has a Directional Antenna with a 20.4 dB null toward the largest County in the market-Genesee-with over 400,000 population. It is only 5.4 kW in the general direction of Central Genesee County. This null is apparently to protect cochannel and first adjacent channels around Detroit and Toledo. Having a null that deep, even though on paper it provides a good signal-City Grade-in that direction, it would seem that this would be problematic with modest antennas. Deep nulls are problematic for just about any broadcast service. It is a good TL, with a very high tower, the highest tower in Michigan at the time it was built, which was built high enough to fill terrain shadow areas to the South along rivers and creeks, and that may mitigate it somewhat. In Northern Michigan, problem areas are filled with 15 kW fill in facilities. They might also include a PBS affiliate with the capabilities of the ATSC 3.0 channel, since CMU and UM abandoned WCMZ-TV/WFUM. Though I don't know if with all the sub channels, there would be that capability with just one channel.

East of Flint here. Ch 25-2 (which was CW46) and 46-2 (which was WEYI) has disappeared and 46-1 showed up, without a rescan.
Rescan gave same result.
Tv tuner is a 2018 Samsung LCD.

WDCQ Delta College has a very good public station with 5 sub-channels, based in Bad Axe.
They didn't take the buyout money and continue to serve their community.

Does anyone know how Gracenote programming guide database becomes aware of these new stations so the stations programming information will be included in their guide?
