WFNI 1070 Indianapolis To Leave The Air August 2.
Arguably Indiana's most powerful AM station, at 50 kW Day/10 kW Night, WFNI 1070 will leave the air August 2, with no definitive plan to return to the air. Another sad chapter in the history of Indiana Radio. It was the legendary WIBC until 2007.

Damnitallanyhow. Nobody to rescue the other Indiana 50KW station? WIBC- too close to make it a clone of WSM.

Emmis has been divesting radio assets for several years now. Within the past year, they exited St. Louis and Austin. It's only a matter of time before they sell their Indy FM stations.
I suspect the real estate on which the WFNI towers sit is worth more than the station as a going concern. AM signals in large markets have sold for about the same price as chicken feed lately. Among larger cities, Indy is among the weakest in terms of AM band patronage.
This move is nonetheless a shock to the system, as 1070 for decades was to Indy what WJR was to Detroit in terms of brand perception.

Sorry, MW, but those decades ended over a decade ago. WIBC took over 93.1 FM in 2007, with all sports going on 1070AM right away. And as soon as they could, "107.5 The Fan" dropped all mention of AM.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Tue Jul 20, 2021 8:19 pm1070 for decades was to Indy what WJR was to Detroit in terms of brand perception.
This actually marked one of the first FM's to feature Rush Limbaugh... without doing any research, I'll bet it's the only Nielsen PPM market where Limbaugh is exclusvily on FM. This is only a shock to the system of people like the poster above you, who is SO stuck in the past, I'll bet still types out posts on a flip phone.

Couple of points - 50K Day only - 10K Night, both signals highly directional, no real listenership outside of Indy for years.
"Clone of WSM"? What could you possibly mean by that? WIBC is alive and healthy on FM. There is truly nothing at 1070 left to save.

They dropped Limbaugh quite a while ago so they could go with a local host. Limbaugh fans had to turn to WOWO to listen daily.

Wasn't 1070 50kW night until a few years ago?FakeAndyStuart wrote: ↑Wed Jul 21, 2021 8:51 amCouple of points - 50K Day only - 10K Night, both signals highly directional, no real listenership outside of Indy for years.

You're thinking of 1190 WOWO, ftballfan. They lost the 50 kW night signal many years ago actually. They dropped back to 9.8 kW to accommodate the upgrade of a co-channel station in the NYC area.
No argument from me; I agree completely.Sorry, MW, but those decades ended over a decade ago.

Rush was on WNDE 1260, a sports station.

Does this make that frequency up for grabs?

No. Let them apply for an STA location to broadcast from in the mean time, and a workable CP, even with flea power at Night. Then make them a reasonable offer.
