Also, like it or not, Charles Lahser got to greater Detroit and held local positions of note several score before Fred Lasher pitched for the Tigers, so, Lahser it is.

That is a frequent occurrence here. Once that train is put down on the track, that's where it stays.

I thought this one started because one of the on-air talent mispronounced it or another common local example (Groesbeck, Schoenherr, etc), but I scrolled back to the top and it was a street sign. Probably should have come with a warning in case there are some of the traffic reporters out on the roads in that area.

But that’s actually correct. It’s a baseline for map making purposes and that line runs all the way across the state. The road happens to run on top of the line.

You get far enough west and it’s called Base Line Road and not 8 Mile or Eight Mile.

when I lived in northwest Detroit in the early 60's everyone I knew pronounced it as "Lasher" even though it was spelled "Lahser", we seemed to think hat the street sign was just screwed up.

My mother was one of those always pronouncing it as Lasher, so I grew up following her lead. When I was old enough to know better, I asked her why she said “Lasher.” She said a posh neighbor woman pronounced it “Lahser” but she chalked it up to her just putting on airs.

My dad also calls it "Lasher". I notice that no one(that I know) under 60 says "Lasher". Seems to be all the old people. But I don't think kids graduate from Bloomfield Hills Lasher, so I think that is the final say in this.
