FM Tropo Opening in Much of the Lower Peninsula Area

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

FM Tropo Opening in Much of the Lower Peninsula Area

Post by CK-722 » Sat Jan 09, 2021 6:33 pm

Has anyone noticed that there is a tropo opening on FM this afternoon?

It's hard to tell without a very selective receiver though, since the band is so jammed up with squeeze ins and low power translators and stations. And probably not much near Detroit since there is so much IBOC sideband interference.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Same (x, y, z), different (t)

I’ve definitely been picking up more stations outside of town than usual here in TC today...

Too late for me to try it today, but maybe it will still be active tomorrow. Here in south west ON, about 90 miles east of Windsor, the FM band isn't really cluttered on a normal day.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Last weekend had some enhancement. I was in the Lansing area at the time and a lot of Detroit stations were pounding in like locals, even got WDZH to lock in HD. Some Toledo area stations were also coming in well, including WGTE, WRVF, WCKY and WPFX. On my drive home I managed to carry WKLQ all the way to the Ingham/Livingston county line, an area where WCEN is usually rock solid.

This happened in UHF also. I got some Detroit and Lansing area TV stations that I normally do not get (Tri-Cities area).
