Detroit News.
The new policies are expected to temporarily halt in-person instruction at high schools and colleges, dine-in service at restaurants and bars, and high school athletics as well as close some businesses, including movie theaters and casinos, according to two sources with knowledge of the plans.

The restrictions are expected to take effect on Wednesday and be in place for three weeks, ending Dec. 8. During the pause, people will be encouraged to work from home if their jobs can be done remotely.

A press conference will take place at 6 p.m. Sunday — a rare weekend briefing that comes five days after the governor said she was exploring the “next steps” her administration would take against COVID-19.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
Under the new policies, hair salons, retail shops and preschool through eighth-grade schools will still be allowed to be open, according to the sources. Restaurants will be able to offer take-out and outdoor dining, and gyms and pools can be open for individual exercise.

Michigan shattered its weekly coronavirus case record last week with a total of 44,019 new cases reported, the fifth consecutive record week for confirmed infections.

"Unfortunately, this is a continuation of the very concerning spike in cases, deaths and hospitalizations," said Bob Wheaton, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, on Friday.

Finally! She was a bit slow on the draw with it this time, but at least its being done now. Sadly, our population includes many people who believe that protecting against a disease that is deadly, destructive, and has a hell of a long recovery period for some, and absolutely no symptoms for others is not in the interest of public safety, or worse, believe that enforcing protective measures is some sort of form of weakness.

My father-in-law has congestive heart failure and he's been in Port Huron Hospital since Friday. The guy went in for a UTI, and had been sitting in the ER, waiting for a room for so long he had a heart attack. They didn't even notice it happened because they're so busy dealing with COVID cases, on top of other things. The guy still does not have a room because things are so backed up. That's where we are at right now. You could literally be dying, and still not get a bed in a hospital.

Now, I seem to remember seeing people complaining how hospitals were ghost towns while we were in lockdown before. Sort of as a way to say "see! all of this is unnecessary!" Well, we tried it the other way and opened things up. Now old people are in the process of dying in hospitals because of this shit. I feel like the only way some of these idiots can accept that they were wrong would be to literally live through it personally.

Munson Hospital sent an emergency appendectomy case to Manistee (1 hour away) Friday because the hospital was overwhelmed with Covid.

I’d say this is a gross abuse of power, but I’m not going to follow it, so it’s a big F-U!
I call on ALL of these places to stay open.

I guess just too many small businesses were starting to recover.

It's pure and simple why big government, both Democrat and RINO, want to put small business out of business. These people crave CONTROL, and they have less control over small business. Too many types of small businesses have already been put out of business by big business, chains, and big box stores. I couldn't stand big box stores before-hard to park close, lots of walking, no personnel to answer questions, etc. For instance, I go to Ace Hardware because many are at least locally franchised, though a chain, and you don't have far to park or walk far, as opposed to Home Despot and Lowe's.

And I prefer the Piggly Wiggly to giant food stores.

I honestly get tired of business owners whining. Some people just weren't cut out for that type of work and should go get a job somewhere else. I've told customers to their face that very thing and it's just kind of a reality of business ownership.

Restaurants are going to close and a franchise who knows how to operate a delivery and carry out business will replace that restaurant.
This clown is advocating for local places to be replaced by chains. Pathetic.
Hey Matt, how much business consulting do you do? how many years have you been a small business owner?

None? Pathetic that you even think you can comment on these matters.
The only thing more obnoxious than your unique combination of arrogance and ignorance is your severe inability to comprehend anything you read. I very clearly pointed out that you are pathetic for hoping chains replace local restaurants. I don't care what you do, probably poorly, for your career.

I generally support the moves the Governor is making in this instance.

Hospitals are getting overwhelmed. There is clearly a renewed public health emergency.

Crowding a bunch of diners into a restaurant who leave germ soaked dishes and napkins behind seems like a terrible idea to me given current case levels. Ditto casinos.

College campuses and high schools are COVID factories. Best to close them down now instead of leaving them open and greatly ramping up the risk of COVID spread around dinner tables at Thanksgiving.

Yes, the financial blow some business owners and employees will have to endure sucks. But we're talking three weeks. If they don't have enough liquidity to get through three weeks, there are probably greater underlying issues in play.

I do hope Whitmer uses the three weeks to develop a longer-term COVID mitigation strategy with the legislature's input. The fact she continually sidesteps them does bother me.

This is more of a general comment than COVID-centric, but I just feel that businesses should be using this as an opportunity to move toward a cloud-based workplace. There are so many tools to support this nowadays, it shocks me that more don't move in this direction. I haven't had a completely on-ground working arrangement since 2009, and frankly, if its done right you can get a ton more of productivity and manage resources more effectively by doing so. If one good thing will come from all this, its that transition.

So you support these actions where you will have extended families that were going to celebrate Thanksgiving at a restaurant that now may gather at a house, exponentially increasing spread risk? Cool...

These new restrictions are ultimately an end around to avoid the state legislature having its Constitutionally-granted input.

Stores need to start cracking down on non mask wearers. But they don't wanna lose a sale... it's like they're placing more profit above public safety.
Not their job to enforce non mask wearing fools, yea that works out real well when 16 year old Wendy the hostess/cashier/typical employee at Kroger/Meijers confronts 50 year old "Hank" who rides his Harley everywhere, and tells him he needs to mask up, yea that goes over real well...

No one should be gathering anywhere! Stay the fuck home.

Some people want to see their family. Restaurants have not been spreading conduits.

Some businesses require direct contact, like many medical exams and tests. How do you do PT in the cloud?

300,000 people have already left New York City since the Chinese virus was sent over, and the riots this Summer. Lots of businesses and homes are boarded up. Many will never return. There is going to be a H*** bust in rental properties, which businesses decided were no longer needed.

People have discovered that they can live without Broadway shows, Concerts, Night Life, etc. And "Sex And The City" is so over.
