American politics in general is right wing. Our entire spectrum is to the right of Canada and Europe. So American liberals are laughably timid and awfully conservative in the view of everybody else.

Not sure. In Canada liberal is the name of a party. A movement. In the U.S. liberal seems just to be a label that gets tossed around, often intended as a pejorative.
