August Numbers

Post by Reese K Rickards » Fri Sep 11, 2020 6:25 pm

My forecast in the "prognostications" thread have come true. In the August trend WOOD AM took a pretty good hit, especially in this election year. Wood numbers over the summer look like this. May 8.3 June 8.1 July 7.6 August 6.7.
B-93 was up from an 8.4 to an 8.8 Thunder was not worth mentioning, FGR which had popped a 5.5, fell back to a 4.1
Check em all out at https://ratings.radio-online.com/content/arb127

If I Heart GR really wanted to save money, it would sublet two of it's three floors at 77 Monroe Center.

Any way to find out the 25-54 or 18-34 numbers?

Another item worth mentioning is how 91.3 WCSG's numbers have seemingly fallen off a cliff the past two survey periods.

May: 7.2
June: 6.3
July: 4.9
August: 4.5

Blunder's performance is absolutely embarrassing. Some heads need to roll. I did notice the station changed up its voiceovers recently; one pukey voiceover artist was traded for another pukey voiceover artist. At least the new one fits the format better (he has a little "twang" in his voice and sounds a little gruff).

That station will never amount to anything absent an intensive marketing campaign and a switchover to a LOCAL morning drive show.

WGRD has bounced back nicely, and Star 105.7 has had one of its best summers in a quite a while.

I underestimated 105.3 Hot FM; they seem to be slowly but consistently gaining perhaps at WLHT's expense.

Will be interesting to see if either of the two sports stations can recover now that the NBA, MLB, and now NFL are in full swing.

What's even more interesting, is how a AM slash low power FM 250 watts is spanking 6 local stations that have tons more power and coverage.

WGRD came back strong 3rd in the market. Must be people like that free beer and hot dogs in the morning or the ACDC they play every day.

B93 runs the show in West Michigan. Same goes for WTCM in Northern Michigan. I actually think TCM has a way better play list and oh real jocks all day. Not this voice tracked junk from out of state. If you call WTCM someone live in the studio answers.

Radio was alive in Grand Rapids 25 years ago. The morning boys on B93, Howard Stern on KLQ, Rick Darla and Scott on GRD. Steve and Sabrina on SNX and Tom and Jerry on W lite. Man that was good radio and real talent. 1057 had all request love songs at night. EZ1057 ha I can't remember the jocks name.

104.9's signal strength is very respectable in Grand Rapids and all adjacent suburbs. It is easier to receive than either WSNX or WHTS in many locales.

Overall, I agree that WTCM-FM is a better sounding station from top to bottom than B93, although B93 is no slouch.

I remember that show! Was it Stan Atkinson?

I'm not sure, going to maybe do some research. They played Lady in Red and Boys to men every night. I mean because that's what people kept requesting ha.

Stan Atkinson was the PD at EZ 105.7. I believe Larry McLain was on the air on the evening shift

"EZ Love Songs"... boy, that brings back some memories. I attended college at Aquinas from 1998-2002. I recall Delilah bouncing from 100.5 to 95.7 to 105.7 during that time. And after W-Lite lost Delilah to EZ (I'm pretty sure they hadn't changed to Star yet at that time), W-Lite aired the Jones Radio Network AC format evening show (Friday Epley) for a time. A lot less annoying than Delilah, but also pretty lifeless and boring as I recall. 100.5 also had something called Nostalgia Nights for a time (probably hoping to attract some of the Majic 810 audience after that station signed off) where they played even older music than they did during daytime hours, artists like Connie Francis. Interesting listening for sure.

I have fond memories of West Michigan radio during that time. Most of the Grand Rapids and K'zoo stations I listened to (W-Lite, EZ/Star, River, WSNX, I-96, WODJ, WKFR, Q-Lite/Q106.5) blew their Detroit counterparts of the same format out of the water, at least to my ears at the time. Even the Clear Channel stations seemed to have more life to them before Premium Choice and out-of-market voicetracking became the norm.

I forgot about magic 810am nostalgia format. Seems WPLB 1380 in Greenvilie had the same format at that time. WPLB 1380 is now WGLM 1380 in Greenville, with a simulcast of the 106.3 fm signal in Lakeview.

WMJH 810 now has a Spanish format, with a Fm translator on 9.33fm. Its a shame they don't subscribe to ratings, because I bet they are kicking ass. Grand Rapids is 20 percent Hispanic and I think Clear Channel missed that nitch demo.

920 WOKY in Milwaukee and the late 940 out of South Haven also aired that same satellite format (America's Best Music from Westwood One) at that time. It's also the same format that aired on 1180 WXLA until they went to Soft AC about a month ago (WXLA couldn't be heard in G.R. back then; they can now with 10,000 watts directional).

Now 980 WAKV is the only Adult Standards format left in the state (and they've always done the music locally to my knowledge), although 1480 WGVU does a traditional-pop show on Sunday mornings.

Jim Higgs is the owner/operator of WAKV. I am more than certain he programs the music. Then again, you thought a 23-13 lead was safe...
